I bit my bottom lip a second before replying, “I’m still working on deserving this whole happiness thing. The fact I’m so happy right now and it’s not a dream is hard to accept.”

He smiled. “I’m here. And I doubt you’d come as hard in a dream compared to what I can do in the flesh.”

I lightly swatted his chest. “Be serious.”

“I am. But regardless, we still have nearly a month before we talk to my kids. Let’s just take it one day at a time, one night at a time, and I’ll do my best to convince you this is your life now. Our life now.”

I kissed him. “Okay.”

West wrapped his arms around me, and for a few minutes, we sat in silence, basking in the warmth and presence of one another.

Finally, I broke the silence. “I still can’t believe you made whip cream so damn hot.”

He chuckled. “When I have trouble sleeping, I imagine ways to torture you slowly. That was one of the scenarios.”

I lifted my head. “Do you, now? Instead of sheep, it’s this position, that position, position fifty-eight…”

He tickled my side, and I yelped before scrambling off his lap. “What was that for?”

“If you kept it up, I would be tempted to try two more positions tonight. But you’re exhausted, Emmy. I can see it.”

I tried not to yawn and failed. “I’ve been up since four a.m.”

“All so you can support my kids and then see me.”

“You and your kids are worth being a little tired for.”

Something flashed across his eyes I couldn’t read before he got up. “Then let me clean you up, tuck you in, and you can get some sleep.”

I nodded, and he went to the bathroom. Once West finished, he gave me a lingering goodnight kiss before dressing and heading home.

As I lay on my side, staring at the empty side of the bed, I wished he could stay every night.

One more month and then we can see where this goes.

Holding that thought close, I fell asleep and dreamed of having my own little family with West, Avery, and Wyatt.

ChapterThirty-Eight

Weston

Emmy:The gazebo you built is amazing. Maybe you should show off those skills at the next wedding expo.

Me:I built it for you. I don’t want to do it for strangers.

Emmy: I’ll treasure it.

Me:Maybe we can even try Position 22 in it.

Emmy: That might require some acrobatics.

Me:I can build anything we need.

Emmy:Is this your way of saying you want to build sex dungeons for a living?

Me:Um, no.

Emmy:Hey, I’d be supportive. Just think, someone could start an underground sex club in Starry Hills…
