Beck:Yes, I have the ring.

Me:I didn’t even ask.

Zach:But you were going to. You’ve done it ten times already.

Beck:It’s rather insulting.

Abby:Oh, stop it. He’s nervous. He was the first to get married and is also now the second.

Aunt Lori:Really, when are the rest of you going to get married? I hope it’s while I’m still alive.

Nolan:I have a fiancée, remember?

Aunt Lori:Do you? Because it all seems fishy to me.

Zach:Be nice, Aunt Lori. Katie and Nolan seem to be in love to me.

Me:Can we talk about this later? I’m about to get married. Again.

Beck:Yes. I’ll be up shortly to get you. Can’t shirk my best man duties.

Me:For once.

Beck:

Me:Back at you, brother.

Watching Emmy as she walked down the aisle toward me had been perfect. Unlike with my first marriage, we loved each other, had chosen to spend our lives together, and I wasn’t doing it out of a sense of duty and a plan of running away.

We were surrounded by our friends and family during the ceremony but kept it on the small side. Abby and Sam Evans—Emmy’s new second-in-command now that Abby had left—had taken Emmy’s plans and made them a reality.

The ceremony I barely remembered, but now we sat together at the head table for the reception, holding hands under it, and watched as Avery and Wyatt danced on the small dance floor with Nolan and Katie.

Emmy squeezed my hand and whispered, “Do you think they’re for real?”

Ever since Nolan had brought Katie as his date to Thanksgiving dinner last year, we’d all tried to guess if they were serious or not. “I know Nolan mentioned once at the bar that he’d thought of getting a fake fiancée to stop the rumors started by his ex, but I don’t know. They seem to care about each other and make a lot of sexy eyes over the table.”

“Well, I hope it works out. They complement each other, I think. And Nolan deserves someone who sees him as a man and not a movie star or some kind of conquest.”

“I agree.” I brought our clasped hands up and kissed the back of Emmy’s. “But it’s our wedding day, and I want to dance with my wife. Will you do the honor, Mrs. Wolfe-Mendoza?”

“I would be delighted, Mr. Wolfe.”

We smiled at each other, and I helped Emmy out of her seat, which took some maneuvering. “Why the fuck do you need such a big skirt?”

“I like it. I’m kind of like a princess for a day.”

“You mean fairy queen. You even have a crown thing.”

“It’s a little tiara. Avery helped me pick it out.”

I glanced at my daughter, who had her own crown on. “I think she did it so she could be the fairy princess to your fairy queen.”

Emmy threaded her arm through mine. “That makes you a king and Wyatt a prince. I wonder what the cats would be. Messengers?”

“They can be cats. I’m just glad Avery finally let the ring bearer idea go.”

As we moved toward the steps leading to the main floor, Emmy laughed. “She did train Anna to walk on a cat leash. So it would’ve been possible.”
