The employee shrugged.

I glanced at Emmy, but she didn’t meet my eye. No doubt she was thinking what I was—that we could share my room, but there was only one bed.

My dick screamed yes, take it and then find a way to finally thrust into her hot, wet pussy and make her scream in pleasure.

However, the head on my shoulders asked the employee, “Are there any cots available to set up in the room?”

More typing. “Yes, I can do that.”

I let out a mental sigh. Being in the same room as her would be fucking torture, but at least she wouldn’t be mere inches away from me. “Then do that. Ms. Mendoza will need a room key too.”

“Are you sure, West? I can always see if Abby’s friend has somewhere for me to sleep too.”

“It’s up to you, of course. But I know you, and you’ll want to get an early start tomorrow. But Abby may not, given she hasn’t seen her friend in a while.”

She bit her bottom lip, and it took everything I had to keep my gaze fixed on her eyes. She eventually sighed. “You’re right. We’ll have to share.”

After finally meeting my gaze, she searched my eyes. I noticed nervousness and worry and…guilt? Why the fuck was there guilt?

I wasn’t about to ask her in the middle of the reception area. Once we got our keys, I took her luggage for her—she tried to protest, but I wasn’t having it—and we headed for the elevators. Silence stretched for the entire walk. But after the elevator doors closed and we were alone, she blurted, “Are you sure about this?”

I did my best not to scowl. “Yes, it’s fine. I’ll sleep on the cot, and you can have the bed. But maybe just give me a bathroom schedule, so I can shower before you get ready.”

“I’ll take the cot.”

“No, you won’t.”

“But, West—”

“No buts. Let me be a gentleman, Emmy.”

She bit her lip again and finally blew out a breath. “Fine. But I’m buying you dinner.”

Shit, that meant we’d be eating dinner together. Maybe even alone. Like on a date.

I nearly laughed at that. I mean, we were going to share a room, for fuck’s sake. I’d hear her breathing while asleep or I might wake up to her taking a shower. Which would only stir my imagination for what she looked like as water cascaded down her naked body, a drop lingering on her nipple, begging to be licked off.

Dinner was nothing compared to that.

The elevator doors opened. We walked down the hall until we stopped in front of our room and stared. It was almost as if we were about to cross some barrier, one we’d both tried to keep in place and failed.

Deciding I was being ridiculous, I inserted the card, opened the door, and gestured for Emmy to enter. I followed close behind her until she stopped near the bed, and I almost bumped into her.

She probably noticed the same thing I did—the bed took up most of the room, and there was barely a place to put a cot against the far wall, under where the TV hung on the wall.

Thank fuck for TVs being so thin these days. The giant boxes from my childhood would’ve taken up the space, meaning we’d have to share the bed.

Part of me wished for the old-school TVs.

Stop it. Not going to happen.I cleared my throat. “It’s nice enough.”

She went to the window, peeked out, and then finally faced me. Her expression was one I couldn’t read, though. “I’m sorry, West. I really did book a room, I promise. I tried looking for the confirmation email, but I guess I deleted it.”

Frowning, I stored the luggage on the little foldable stand things hotels always had. “Don’t apologize. I plan to eat a huge-ass dinner, so it’s not like you’re going to be saving money in the end.”

She laughed—a soft one, almost as if it’d caught her by surprise—and my day instantly became better.

You could try to make her laugh every day. Then you’d get to see that gorgeous smile all the time.
