“The twins don’t take naps anymore, so you’re a little early for story time.”

“I’m aware. Is Avery or Wyatt around?”

“No, Zach took them into town to visit the All Things Shop. Probably to get some ideas for their birthday this fall. We’re going to have a huge party, by the way, since it’s their first one in Starry Hills.”

Wyatt, in particular, didn’t like to be the center of attention. “Do they even want one?”

“I asked, and even Wyatt said yes after a private conversation with his sister.”

Which meant Wyatt might not actually want a party but found it hard to say no to his twin.

“Well, if they want one, let me know what I need to buy. No bouncy castles or clowns or shit like that, though.”

“They’re going to be eleven, not five.”

I hesitated and then remembered my aunt’s words about not keeping my family walled off. “They’ve never had a party before so just don’t overwhelm them.”

“Why not?”

“Their grandparents wouldn’t allow it. And no amount of arguing from me would change their minds either.”

My aunt paused a few seconds before saying, “Well, I’m glad you three are back home with us. I’ll make sure to spoil you all for the foreseeable future.”

I smiled. “Thanks, Aunt Lori.”

“Think nothing of it. Just don’t forget to buy me a tacky Reno mug while you’re there.”

Aunt Lori loved the weirdest, tackiest mugs from tourist destinations, saying they were like ugly Christmas sweaters you could show off all year long. “I’ll buy the ugliest one I can find. Talk to you later, Aunt Lori.”

“Love you too, West.”

She hung up, and I stared at my phone. I didn’t know why I had trouble saying those words to anyone but my children, but I did.

Probably because the last time I’d said them to Andrea, she’d thrown them back in my face.

“If you loved me, you would let my parents raise the kids and give me all your attention. I’m your wife. I was first. But you won’t do that, so you don’t love me at all.”

Not wanting the past to ruin my time in Reno, I locked that shit up and went to do a few more things on my list for the expo. The earlier I could sneak back to the room, the more time I could prepare for Emmy and what I planned to do with her.

ChapterTwenty-Seven

Emilia

Katie:So, have you boned West yet?

Me:WTF are you talking about?

Katie:Oh, come on. I heard you’re sharing a room now. It’s bound to happen. I mean, I have eyes and I’ve seen how you guys mentally undress each other.

Me:Abby.

Katie:She might’ve had some wine and texted me last night. I’m innocent.

Me:Says the woman asking me if I boned West.

Katie:So, have you? He’s hot, in a scowly-hairy way.

Me:He’s not hairy.
