Katie:Aha! You’ve seen him naked.

Me:He swam in my pool. And it’s not the 1800s, when he’d have a full-body swimsuit.

Katie:Right. Well, you’ll talk eventually. Abby won’t want to hear about West’s dick, but I will. Strictly for research purposes, of course.

Me:

Katie:

Once Abby and I finished our meeting with Maria Hernandez, the premier flower vendor in Northern California, and were alone again, Abby hugged me. “You did it.”

I smiled. “You helped.”

“Still, Maria’s very picky about which clients she takes on. And yet you made it seem easy to win her over.”

I shrugged. “Well, I’d done my research beforehand. And if you come prepared, praise with honesty, and have a business proposal in mind, it’s a lot easier to get what you want.”

Abby sighed. “All of this reminds me why I wanted to be a teacher. Business doesn’t come as easily to me as it does for you.”

“And I’m sure you’ll be in a classroom again soon, Abby. Your dream job is out there.”

Abby scrunched her nose. “I don’t know. I get asked in interviews why I turned down the job in San Jose, and it’s not like I can say my mentor teacher took advantage, used me as his fuck toy, and then tossed me away when it was convenient.”

The story was a little more complicated than that, but I knew what she meant. “That douchebag will get what’s coming to him eventually, Abby. But you’re an amazing teacher, and I won’t let you give up your dreams because of that loser. Even if I love working with you and having you as a roommate, I know it’s not what you want to do forever.”

“Yeah. I’m super grateful for the job, but it’s definitely not my passion.”

I hugged Abby. “I know. But for now, though, we’re kicking ass and taking names. If we get the Zara Jones account, the sky will be the limit.”

Abby studied me a second, and I knew what she would ask. To be honest, I was surprised she’d lasted this long without blurting it out. “So you and my brother are a thing now, huh?”

“That obvious, is it?”

“Well, you had that I’ve-been-fucked-good look when we met up earlier.”

“I hope only you noticed it and not Maria.”

“Don’t worry, it was just me. She probably just thought you were in a good mood. And you were, by the way. Does that mean you’re giving West a chance?”

“Only while we’re in Reno, and then things go back to the way they were.”

“Hmm.” I opened my mouth, but Abby beat me to it. “I’m not going to say another word. But just give West a chance, Emmy. He’s had a shitty time so far and could use a little fun and laughter in his life.”

His difficult past was exactly why he should stay far away from me. Because I’d probably end up hurting him eventually, making his life shitty again.

Speaking of the devil, West texted me:

West:Come on up when you’re ready. We’re dining in tonight.

I smiled, and Abby snorted. “That smile speaks volumes. Just go. And don’t be late for tomorrow morning! Even if most of the prep work is done, the doors open at ten a.m., and you don’t want to miss it.”

“Yes, Mom.”

Abby stuck out her tongue, and we both laughed. I waved and did my best not to run to the elevator.

By the time I reached our room, my heart thudded in my chest, and my palms sweated a little. Both in anticipation and nervousness.

What did he have planned for us?
