The vampire’s grip on her waist loosened, then fell away. When Leah opened her eyes again, the dark-haired vampire had fled. Her limbs trembling, she turned to face her rescuer. Her body had known even before her brain did. She’d only ever responded to one individual that way.

With a lust that tempted her to throw caution to the wind.

Julian Blackmore.

He stood before her, a ferocious beast given true form. There was nothing left of the urbane man from earlier. No, this terrifying monster before her was his true nature. His shirt was gone, revealing planes of carved muscles tightened with tension. His eyes glinted red. He was a vicious demon, fangs and claws dripping blood, his midnight wings spread wide. A quick glance at the ground showed the blond vampire decapitated, his face frozen in shock.

If desire hadn’t swamped her, she’d be on her knees begging for her life.

Leah stepped back involuntarily, but she wasn’t truly afraid. When he snarled and snapped at her, she stopped, remembering all she knew about feral animals.

“Come here.” His words came out in a guttural growl. Instead of fear, it made her skin too tight and warm for her peace of mind.

“I don’t think so.” She had no plans to go to her death.

Before she could blink, he had come to her, his wings wrapping her in a cocoon.

Hot. She registered that one sensation as his arms crushed her against him, before his mouth took hers in a wild and hungry kiss.

Lightning. Thunder. Flames licking at her skin. Razor-sharp desire shot through her like the quickest of poisons. His lips were hard and hot like the rest of him. He kissed her with an almost bruising force, as if in that one kiss he could satisfy an eternity of cravings. As his mouth took hers ruthlessly, his tongue parting her lips so that it could dart inside and taste her, Leah’s thoughts scattered.

Longing, which was as fierce as her need to survive, filled her. She felt his kiss, his claiming, down to the tips of her toes. There was nothing but them. His ferocious hunger seared through her, leaving nothing behind except emptiness waiting to be filled.

She kissed him back, not even thinking about what she was doing. No, her body, her lust, was in control now. When his fangs scraped her lip, she bit down on his lips. She clutched at him, at the solid muscles that bunched under his shoulder. She needed him to fill her. She’d never welcomed a man, but she’d gladly take him, even if he left her a mindless shell afterward.

He pushed her against a hard concrete wall. She forgot the discomfort when his mouth moved, biting and scraping down the curve of her neck. Leah shuddered from the pleasure. When he lifted her, she wrapped her legs around his waist, fitting the hard length of him against the part of her that needed him the most.

“Please,” she begged. The desire, the emptiness, it drove her crazy. She rubbed against him, desperate for his touch. Her head rolled back when he palmed her breasts through her shirt and squeezed, his lips still doing that wonderful thing at her collar, making her stomach clench in hunger.

Then, as suddenly as he turned her into nothing but hormones, he was gone.

Unbelievable. He’d almost taken her. Here. Right on the street. Where anyone could watch.

Sure enough, vampires and humans alike stared with interest, drawn by Leah’s uninhibited cries and the lust that tainted the air.

Julian growled at the onlookers. The wildness within him had spun out of control. His claws shot out, ready to kill the first vampire who looked at his mate the wrong way.

His mate.

Gods, when he’d seen her… trapped between those vampires…

His vision had turned red. He had to protect her, and end those who dared to touch what was his.

He’d scented the two vampires’ arousal, their need to hurt, to enslave, their pleasure in the hunt.

All aimed at his mate. A human.

Julian didn’t dare think what would’ve happened if Leah had come to harm. The knowledge that he couldn’t protect the one person meant for him would have broken him. Even if they hadn’t completed their mating, and he still had no plans to complete it, he wouldn’t be able to bear the fact he’d failed to protect her.

He’d wanted to chase after the second vampire, had needed to soak in his blood. It was the only way to conquer the anger swirling like a tornado inside him, but he dared not leave her alone.

With his prey having fled, being close to his mate was the only way to ease his turmoil. He couldn’t stop kissing her, just as much as he couldn’t change who his soulmate was.

He’d known the lust she’d stir in him, had anticipated the fire that ignited in his blood the moment they touched, but he hadn’t expected her sweetness or her response that was equal to his ardor. If she’d pushed him away, he’d have pushed harder to claim what was his. Her feverish response, however, smoothed away the edge of madness.

Her blood called to him, like her shining soul calling to the empty place inside him where his soul should be. He hadn’t craved blood in centuries, but gods, how he craved hers. It would taste like the finest wine, like the elixir of the gods, better than his first feeding.

Just the thought of it made his fangs ache with fierce longing.
