He tried to pull out her mind but couldn’t. She bound him to her. A part of her had a will of its own and tied him there, refusing to let him leave.

“Felix.” Her breathless plea was all he could take.

He started to cross over to her, planning on dragging her to him and kissing her until she submitted. The terror in her eyes stopped him cold. He hated it. He never figured out why or when that feeling had taken root within her.

How dare she be afraid of him when everything he’d done was to protect and love her?

He was tempted to yell at her, to shake her for an explanation, but for what? It hadn’t worked before. He took a deep breath to calm his jumbled feelings as his brain whirled. He needed her to stay with him. How could he convince her?

Gabby unfroze and broke the mating bond’s effort to pull them together. “It’s time for me to leave.”

Felix remained still or he would have done something he’d regret. “And where will you stay?”

“I will stay with Nikolas.”

“No.” The word roared out of him. The vampire howled, leaping to the surface. Maddened beyond reason, he almost grabbed her.Take her back to Eden. She’s mine.

It took every ounce of his enormous will to not move. His control was running thin. If she dared to push her luck further, he would lose it and pull Nikolas apart limb from limb and throw him into the sun.

Gabby seemed to sense his dangerous condition. Keeping her eyes trained on him, she backed up toward the arched corridor. Felix’s gaze dogged her every step; each one pulled on his heart as she moved further away.

She stopped her retreat under the arches and squared her shoulders. “I will stay here, only if you promise to stay in this outer room and never enter the bedroom without my permission.”

Felix clenched his jaw until he thought his teeth would crack. “Agreed.”

He was already planning on how to receive an invitation into the bedroom. This longing, this heat between them, it would be satisfied.

Soon.

Neither of them could resist it. He didn’t even want to.

“Good.” After nodding her approval, she headed to the mahogany door leading to the next room. “And stay out of my head.”

“If you can stay out of mine,” he challenged.

He gave her an insolent grin when she glared icicles at him. With a haughty tilt of her head, a gesture he loved, she entered the bedroom without slamming the door.

Excuse me, but I was raised better than that. Her sharp words came on the heels of his thought.

What did you say about staying out of each other’s heads?

Felix chuckled when she cursed him. His heart lightened at her vehement response. He’d won this round, for now.

Sure, he was stuck in the living room like a husband kicked out after a marital spat, but he’d convinced her to stay without resorting to violence. That counted for something.

This time, he would not let her go.

Chapter Five

Aaah!Gabby gritted her teeth with frustration. What was it about that awful vampire that made her happy, furious, and terrified all at once?

She could never understand it, not even when she knew she loved him. She still loved him. Her love for him had never changed or diminished. It had been so easy to fall in love with him at the beginning, when he hadn’t been her master.

Her hands tightened on the doorknob as memories of those days returned to her. Trapped in his castle, needing his permission for everything, she had been nothing but a prisoner, not given a chance to explore her newfound powers. She had to leave him. If she hadn’t, she’d have died inside. He must have sensed it, for why else would he have released her?

Doing her best to put Felix out of her mind, Gabby focused on the task at hand.

Getting ready for the Opening Gala.
