The suitcase she’d sent ahead stood next to the massive canopy bed. She gazed at the bed wistfully, exhaustion dragging her down. Perhaps it hadn’t been a great idea to arrive right before the Gala, to not have time to rest before facing important humans and the world’s most powerful vampires.

After laying the dress she’d picked for the Gala on the bed, she entered the bathroom and undressed. The mirror over the double sinks stunned her again. A mirror this size and clear would’ve cost a fortune in her time, but here, according to Nikolas, it was common place to have mirrors in bathrooms.

Another invention that delighted her was the shower. The fact she didn’t need an army of servants and maids to bring up water, that hot water came out of the wall whenever one needed to clean, was beyond her wildest imagination.

And don’t even get her started on the toilet.

Gabby turned on the shower, marveling as the spray of water hit her hand. It took a few seconds for it to turn hot. She adjusted the heat to what she found comfortable, stepped under the spray, and sighed with delight.

Despite Felix, despite everything she had to face, this new world was fantastic. She was still absorbing it all in, still processing. It would be a long time before she ran out of interesting things to learn.

Gabby mused on everything she’d learned while using the shampoo and conditioner, careful not to get it into her eyes. Maria had told her there were a million different options for everything. She’d shown Gabby the Internet and how to purchase things on only a small screen. She had trouble wrapping her mind around the idea you didn’t need physical money to purchase things.

Tesoro mio, we’re running out of time.Felix’s gentle reminder jolted out of her thoughts.

Right, the Gala. She sent Felix the mental equivalent of a glare. He responded by throwing her a kiss through their link.

One day, she’d get rid of him.

Once Gabby dried off, she realized she had another problem.

Her hair.

The curls lay limp and damp against her head and neck. In the centuries she’d been alive, someone had always been there to do her hair. She couldn’t very well go to the Gala with wet strands, could she? Was that something women did nowadays?

Felix had the decency to knock on the bedroom door. “Is everything all right?”

Gabby curbed her instinct to reach out to Nikolas. He’d done enough for her. Surely, she could figure some things out herself?

“Tesoro mio?”

Hearing the endearment spoken out loud in his midnight voice liquefied her bones. It was a struggle to find her own voice.

“Hold on.”

Gabby put on the robe hanging on the back of the bathroom door. Though the robe had long sleeves, was thick, and reached down past her knees, she still felt exposed when she opened the door.

And froze.

Felix was stunning in a black tuxedo that enhanced his narrow waist and long legs. The collars of the white shirt stood crisp against his neck, the black bow tie perfectly centered. His ebony hair fell loose around his aristocratic face. The smile he sent her, the warmth in his eyes, had her tightening her grip on the door handle to stop her knees from giving out.

Then there was his scent. Beneath the freshly laundered clothes, she smelled the wild and untamed ocean.

Of home.

No, don’t fall for it.His devilish looks had gotten her into trouble the first time. When she’d found him, half dead in the morning sun, she hadn’t believed someone so beautiful could be the evil her brother espoused.

“Is everything okay?”

Gabby turned away and returned to the bathroom, more annoyed at herself than him, though this helpful and polite Felix confused her as well.

Felix stopped at the door to the bathroom. She appreciated him giving her the space. She tugged on her hair, hating she had to ask him of all people. “I don’t know what to do with my hair.”

A dazzling smile stretched across his lips. “Care for some help?”

She raised a skeptical brow. “How can you help?”

“Wait here.”
