Page 70 of Reckless Deal

“Jesus. Okay, could you get me the number of Conrad’s wife?”

“Nora? Why do you need it?”

“She is on the board of a foundation that organizes a charity fashion show.”

“And? Do you want to get on the board?” This conversation is beyond tedious.

“I want to model, walk down the catwalk.”

“What the fuck, Paris? You want to be a model?” I shake my hand and consider hanging up on her. I move to the front entrance and push the closet open.

“Don’t be so disgusted. It’s just one thing on my bucket list.”

“Your bucket list?” I open the cabinet to grab my keys.

“Yes, Gio, could you give me her number?”

I sigh. “Okay, I’ll send it to you.”

She lets out a squeal that seems disproportionate to the situation. “Thank you, Gio. I really appreciate it. Is your girlfriend coming with you today?” she chirps.

“Drop it, Paris, I don’t have a girlfriend.” I lower my forehead to the door frame. Kill me now.

“Oh, she didn’t sign the NDA? I thought… you seemed—”

“I have to go now.” I hang up.

Before I close the closet, I glimpse something on the floor. I pick it up. Mila’s glove. Fuck, she is still everywhere. If my housekeeper hadn’t been with me for seven years, I would fire her right now.

I break several traffic laws on the way to the new Hunter’s Club gym. By the time I park, my newly acquired recklessness courses through me with adrenaline, and a larger dose of annoyance. And then I step into the gym and almost turn around.

Of course, Mila is working the event. Of course, she looks like a vision. Paler and thinner, but still so fucking beautiful it hurts my eyes.

“What is she doing here?” I growl at my stepsister Sydney.

“She’s one of the best event planners we know, and was able to get this all together on short notice. What’s your problem?” Sydney shakes her head and walks away to greet more guests.

I find myself a spot by the window and pull out my phone. For the first time, I can’t find anything to occupy my mind, so I swipe jellies in Candy Crush.

“Oh my God, have you been doing this the whole time we thought you were working?” Gina laughs at my side.

I don’t answer. My gaze lifts and immediately finds the blond ray of sunshine. Our eyes meet and Mila’s face contorts, and then she looks away and starts rearranging the catering plates.

“What happened between the two of you?” Gina is fucking observant, but she’s also Mila’s friend, so I wonder what her point is here. She must know already.

“Don’t you have a husband to bother?” I snarl.

She raises her eyebrows and puts her hand on her belly in that protective motherly way, and I feel like a bastard. “Sorry.”

“I’m going to leave you to your brooding, but the two of you need to talk.” She pins me with a vicious glare.

“Don’t you think I tried?” I snap.

“Try harder,” she pushes through her teeth.

“Don’t fucking tell me what to do.” Yes, I’m that pathetic asshole who pulls a power play with my brother’s wife.

“As someone who took seventeen years to clear the air, I learned my lessons the hard way. Be smart and learn from our mistakes.” She waddles away.
