“I bet she’ll be so happy to see you.”

“Or she’ll be extremely annoyed.”

“Yeah.” I laughed, nodding and looking to see the silhouette of my house materializing in the distance. “It could go either way.”

“Let’s not wake her until morning.”

I watched the gate behind us shut from the side mirror as Elena entered the drive.

Usually, my house felt like a sanctuary, a haven after a long day’s work, but tonight, it felt even more like a refuge.

“Do you always find yourself sneaking around your property at night?”

I shook my head as she pulled in front of my garage. “Rarely.”

“You still love my sister, don’t you?” she asked, turning off the car.

I unbuckled and turned in the seat. “More than anything in this world, and I will do everything within my power to protect her and provide the peace that is her right.”

“You’re such a good guy, Zack.” She nodded. “And Sadie knows that too. She’s just…”

“You don’t have to explain. She experienced something no one should ever have to go through.”

Elena nodded and sighed as we got out of the car. I walked to the trunk as it lifted and took out two large suitcases.

She chuckled and shrugged. “I wasn’t sure how long I might be staying.”

“I have plenty of room for as long as you need.”

“My husband is coming tomorrow. There was only one seat available on tonight’s flight.”

I always liked Jaxson. He was on the opposite side of where I stood on many things, but his moral compass was pointed in the right direction.

And I knew he’d do anything in his family’s power to make this right for Sadie.

“There’s room at the resort tomorrow, but tonight, they were booked,” Elena explained.

“Nonsense. Stay here. The less you’re scattered, the better.” I walked up to the front door, pressed the code into the electronic lock, and quickly went inside to turn off the security system as Elena shut the door behind me.

“Beautiful home, Zack.”

“Thanks.” I grinned. “My brother and I spent so much of our childhood moving around that I knew once I was an adult, I’d find myself a place and plant there.”

She nodded, taking in the foyer. “It’s a lovely place to plant.”

“Do you need anything to drink or snack on or…?”

“I don’t, but thanks for offering.”

“Absolutely. I’ll show you to one of the guest rooms. It’s near Sadie.”

“Perfect, and maybe you can fill me in on what happened earlier this evening,” she said softly as we climbed the stairs.

“Absolutely.” I nodded. “It’s probably good that your husband will be here too.”

“That’s what I was afraid of,” she muttered.

And we both knew the nightmare was starting all over again.
