Elena walked over with a mug of coffee and handed it to Melanie. “The more, the merrier. My sister needs as many eyes on her as possible. She’s a handful.”

“I am merely a magnet for chaos.” Sadie scowled and poured herself her own cup of coffee. “I think that’s what my therapist told me.”

I shook my head. “I’m just putting this out there, but have you considered getting a new one? Your therapist doesn’t seem very nice.”

Sadie snickered. “She’s really good, and you just don’t like her because of some of her advice.”

I laughed, nodding. “Yeah. Precisely.”

Sadie traded a knowing look with her sister, and I knew to tone it down. I might have said it all with a laugh, but I didn’t feel light about it at all.

“You have perfect timing,” I told Melanie. “I was just about to start dinner. You’re welcome to stay.”

Melanie’s cheeks reddened. “Oh, I don’t want to intrude.”

Sadie reached for her and clutched her hands. “Stay. I insist.”

Melanie looked over at me, and I nodded. “We have plenty of food. Don’t make it a wasted trip.”

She nodded. “Okay, then. Count me in.”

Several minutes passed as I was cooking dinner, and I noticed Melanie over with Elena, Jaxson, and Ian, but I didn’t see Sadie.

I glanced back at Melanie and noticed her looking around the family room and not really paying attention to what my brother was saying.

Poor guy.

If that was who he had his sights on, it might not pan out for him.

“Smells delicious,” Sadie said, coming up behind me.

“Thanks.” I reached for the tongs and noticed Sadie scowling at her phone.

“What’s up?”

Sadie’s eyes connected with mine, and she shrugged. “Nothing.”

“It looks like something.”

“Maybe later,” she whispered as I mixed the pasta.

I nodded before pulling out the garlic bread.

“I’ll go set the table,” Sadie said, smiling.

It suddenly felt like old times. Watching her grab the silverware and wander over to the table, my chest tightened at the memory, and the longing gripped me as emotion ran deep.

Her laughter tickled the air, and the desire to start fresh with her stirred.

I glanced at Sadie, and her beauty caught me off guard. Even with all the struggles and the inner turmoil she was going through, she managed to appear carefree and happy.

Since she’d broken up with me, I still found myself conjuring up scenarios where I’d accidentally bump into her around town or how I’d somehow win her back, proving to her that I didn’t need to be a reminder of that awful experience.

I shook my head at the irony as I brought the bowl of pasta over.

Here Sadie was, in my house, because of the very event that brought us together.

“What’s up?” she asked, bringing over the garlic bread.
