The murmurs from down the hall drifted into the kitchen, but I couldn’t understand what they were saying.

But for the first time in a long time, it felt amazing to give up control and trust that things would work out.

Even if I didn’t believe that deep in my heart.

Even if I knew I might need to spend my life running.

Chapter Twelve

Zack

“This is not good.” I shook my head, feeling my pulse pound between my ears.

Jaxson paced in front of me. “Not good at all.”

My brother was on his way over, and I had so much chaotic energy bottling up that I needed to stay away from Sadie. It felt like I wanted to simultaneously pummel her jerk of an ex while dropping Carmella into the ocean, and she didn’t need to see that side of me.

Sadie needed a cool, calm, and collected protector. Not the one letting his emotions guide his every move.

“If you look at the guy, it shouldn’t be much of a challenge.” Jaxson’s eyes met mine.

I nodded. “True.”

Jaxson laughed, shaking his head as he took a seat. “But I know you guys do it the right way, and we…”

I kept my gaze on his. “You have your own methods.”

And suddenly, I wasn’t so averse to them.

“That we do.”

“So, by the looks of it, Tim Venson is living in North Carolina.” I walked over to my laptop and clicked on his profile. He looked like a weasel.

But what concerned me more was that he also looked like he had a fulfilling life.

So why focus on Sadie?

I scratched my chin and shook my head.

Ian walked into the office and grinned the moment he saw Jaxson. “You two look like you’re ready to break some bones.”

I laughed and gave my brother a quick hug. “It’s been one hell of a morning. First, Sadie finds out the case isn’t going to trial because of a plea deal, and then Sadie tells us she’s been getting contacted by her stalker boyfriend.”

Ian whistled and shook his head. “You certainly know how to pick ’em.”

“Well, she didn’t pick me back, so there’s…”

Sadie appeared behind Ian, and her eyes widened.

Shit. She heard.

I played it off and turned my attention to my brother, but I noticed Sadie’s gaze lingered.

“My brother is going to do some digging on your ex, and we’ll see if we can place him here. I’m going to talk with Officer Carl, too, and keep him in the loop. It’s a small town. We’ll be able to spot someone out of the ordinary.”

She nodded, rocking back on her heels. “I feel like I need a walk. I have a therapy session online in like an hour, so maybe before it?”

“Okay,” I said, glancing at Jaxson. “Did you want Jaxson and Elena to accompany you?”
