Her expression fell. “So, you think my ex could actually be here? That I can’t just go outside for a walk?”

My eyes stayed on hers as dread crept through me. I knew what she meant. Would she ever be through with all the hiding and looking over her shoulder? But I couldn’t, in good faith, tell her to hike freely through the woods.

She just looked at me and waited. “I think it’s a high possibility that your ex was here, but I don’t know if he is. We won’t know that for a bit.”

Ian returned her phone, and she slipped it into her pocket.

Sadie drew in a slow breath and let it out equally as deliberately. “I’d like you to walk with me, if that’s okay.”

My heart spun on its axis. Of course, it was okay. I wanted nothing more than to spend all my time with Sadie.

Over the last six months, she’d become my constant companion when I was here. I loved just being with her, listening to her laugh or the way she loved to rib me about my workout routine—just everything.

I loved everything about Sadie.

I clutched my hands together and squeezed them as I nodded. “Yup. Fine, that sounds good. I’ll meet you at the front door in about five minutes.”

A brightness darted through her beautiful eyes, and I felt my throat clench at the thought of not having her.

But I knew this was temporary. When Carmella was back behind bars and we figured out what was going on with her ex, she’d be gone.

My body turned as still as a boulder as I watched her head down the hallway, and all I could think about was how much I felt every crack running through my stone exterior. I missed her, and she was right in front of me.

“You okay, bud?” my brother asked sympathetically.

I nodded. “Yeah. I’m fine. I have to get used to us not being an us.”

“Yeah.” Ian walked over to my laptop and started typing. “I’ll do some more research while you’re out with Sadie. Maybe she can give you some more clues about the guy she used to date.”

“Whatever we find out, I think it’s safe to say we need to teach this guy a lesson.” Jaxson’s low growl of a laugh made me smile.

“You’re about as Alpha as they come, aren’t ya?”

He grinned. “I never really thought about it, but I’m not the one with muscles bursting the seams of my shirts.”

I laughed and shook my head. “At least we all still have our sense of humor.”

Making my way down the hall to the mudroom, I saw Elena giving Sadie a big hug. Her sister’s eyes connected with mine, and I quickly nodded in understanding.

No matter how you analyzed what was happening with Sadie, it wasn’t fair. There was nothing she did to bring any of this to herself. All Carmella had wanted was to get back at Elena and the Volkov brothers. Sadie was just an innocent pawn in everything. And this guy who’s sending the threatening notes sounded like nothing more than a punk who needed to be put in his place.

The problem was that in my line of work, I saw many of these punks create a lot of havoc.

But not to my Sadie.

I clenched my fists as I grabbed a jacket from the mudroom and slid my arms through the sleeves as I thought about what I’d like to do to this ex of hers.

Who did he think he was?

I shook the thought from my head. I’d always prided myself on being on the right side of the law. As a business, we ensured that we’d uphold the law and protect our clients the right way.

But I didn’t care about any of that.

I just wanted peace for Sadie.

She deserved that.

Jaxson offered something earlier and I laughed it off, but the more I thought about what he and his brothers could do, I wondered…
