No judgment ever.

But I also knew that he deserved someone who wasn’t going to be looking over her shoulder all the time, and once Carmella was rereleased, the cycle would start over.

Not to mention Tim.

He couldn’t babysit me for the rest of our lives, and I certainly wouldn’t want that.

“I don’t want my sister to get any ideas,” I explained, pulling on my clothes.

He sat up and nodded with a sexy smirk. “And what ideas are those?”

I didn’t say anything as I tugged my sweater over my head. “You know, sisterly gossip.”

Zack nodded, pulling on his pants, and let out a deep sigh. “You felt so good, Sadie. It’s like you belong in my arms.”

I couldn’t disagree. It did feel right.

He stood and pulled me close. Feeling the strength in his arms brought instant comfort.

My lips still felt swollen, and I didn’t want the feeling to go away. It was such a beautiful reminder of what I had with the man I loved.

“When I’m with you, it’s like the fear just vanishes,” I said softly.

He touched the tip of my nose and kissed it. “Then maybe that means we’re meant to do more of this.”

I smiled. “It just might, but not…”

Zack nodded, interrupting the words I didn’t even want to say, and brushed a piece of hair from my cheek. “Ready for bed?”

“Beyond.” I smiled as we left the guest room and quietly made our way upstairs.

I stopped in front of the guest room I’d been staying in, and his lips turned down when he realized where I planned on sleeping.

“Sorry… I just—”

He kissed me, interrupting my apology, and stepped away. “See you in the morning, Sadie.”

I nodded, feeling numb as I walked into the bedroom and quickly tugged off my clothes. Reaching for my suitcase, I pulled out a pair of pajamas and let out a sigh, wishing I could memorize every second of sleeping with Zack.

As I pulled on my jammies, my gaze landed on the windowsill, and the entire room turned icy.

There was a small seashell propped on the sill.

Tim had been in my room.

Chapter Sixteen

Zack

The last three days felt like an eternity. Sadie had grown distant, and I understood why.

I had failed her.

I'd promised her she would be safe at my house and that no one could get to her, and somehow, Tim had.

Ian, Jaxson, and I had scoured the security footage and found absolutely nothing. There wasn’t a shadow, a bunny, or even a branch falling to trip the security cameras, and that especially included no Tim.

The cameras picked up Sadie and me roaming the woods, kissing, and walking back to the house. It showed Jaxson and Elena taking walks in the evenings. It showed Ian coming up to the house. It captured the pizza driver that night. Sadie found the trinket but no Tim.
