I laughed and nodded. “I was beginning to ask myself that, too, but then it finally hit me that I didn’t want to let other people dictate my happiness. I still want to be free to roam without looking over my shoulder, and somehow, I’ll make that happen.”

She reached over and squeezed my hand. “Good for you, Sadie. You deserve it.”

“Thanks.” I took a bite of chips and sat back in the chair. “So… how is it with Ian?”

A scowl fell across Melanie’s features before she shrugged and smiled at me. “I don’t know. It seems like it could be really complicated.”

“Boys often are,” I teased.

“This one especially.” Melanie stood up. “I forgot the drinks. What do you want? A latte? Juice? Water?”

“I feel so bad being waited on. Anything will do.”

Melanie grinned and grabbed us both a juice before going to the front door and locking it.

“You don’t have to close the store for our lunch. I totally understand if someone comes in.”

She waved her hand. “Nah. It’s fine. It’s been super slow today, and we have a lot to catch up on.”

I nodded slowly. “Yeah, it feels like years have gone by.”

“Your sister is so nice, and her husband is… wow.”

“Yeah, they’re a great couple.”

Melanie nodded and took a bite of her sandwich. “They seemed like it.”

Her eyes dropped to my plate. “Aren’t you going to eat your sandwich?”

I chuckled, taking a sip of juice. “I’ll eat every last morsel of it, don’t you worry. So, tell me all about Ian.”

“Well, he’s cute. But he seems a little gullible.”

My brows raised. “Gullible? That’s a characteristic I wouldn’t have guessed.”

She shrugged. “Could just be me. I don’t know. And he canceled on me when we had dinner planned.”

I straightened in my chair and reached for a chip. “He did?”

That wasn’t the story I’d heard.

“Yeah, so we’ll see where it goes. I’m not holding my breath, and I have a business to grow.”

“I understand that.” I took a bite of the sandwich. “Have you hired someone else, or is my position still available?”

Her eyes widened. “Are you thinking about staying?”

I nodded, taking another bite of the sandwich.

She clapped her hands together and grinned. “That is the best news ever.”

“So I can have my job back?”

“It’s always been yours, girl.”

“I do have a question, though.”

“What’s up?”
