Elena nodded, hugging herself as we all barreled out of Granite Beans.

Sadie had every right to always look over her shoulder. Evil nipped at her every move, and she knew it. She just didn’t understand it.

What kind of depraved person would do this? Over an old college relationship?

And his sister?

This kind of depravity ran deep. It wasn’t easily stopped.

We climbed into my brother’s truck, and he jerked it to life. I held onto the oh-shit bar as he did a U-turn in the middle of town and raced down the road toward the old motel.

“ETA for my brothers arriving on scene at their parents’ is less than five minutes.”

“Shit.” I shook my head. “Tim is a showman. He’s been waiting for this moment. He wants to embarrass and torture her parents in front of her.”

Ian’s grip tightened around the wheel. “And then when that’s over with, she’ll be of no use to him.”

“Exactly,” I agreed as the horror of the situation wove its way through me.

“We’ll get there in time,” Jaxson said from behind us.

He was staring at his phone, and I wasn’t sure he believed it.

Chapter Twenty-One

Sadie

My head pounded with a sharpness that made my stomach sick. My wrists burned from the plastic ties digging into my skin.

But I was alive.

A low hum vibrated through me as I opened my eyes and looked around, trying to figure out where she had taken me.

“You’re up. Just in time,” Tracy cooed.

“Wheremmm…” I tried to speak.

“Shh. Come now. Don’t waste your words. Save them for my brother.”

I looked around the tiny room, realizing the hum I heard was a generator out the back.

Seashells had been strung along the ceilings. Stained wallpaper coated the walls around me. A large flatscreen had been hung in front of me, completely out of step with the condition of the room. My stomach clenched. This had been planned for a long time.

I wiggled to my side. She’d put me on a dirty mattress with a few blankets on top.

Please, Zack. I’m so sorry for leaving without telling. I’m in a motel.

It was my fault.

“So, it’s close to showtime. My brother just needed a little extra prep time. Turns out your dad had a bit of a fight in him after all.” She laughed wickedly as my stomach roiled with sickness.

“Lvhmln,” I screamed.

“What was that? Leave him alone?” Her laughter continued. “I might have sprinkled a little too much on your sandwich. I think Tim wanted you to be able to talk with him.”

Tracy frowned. “But I can only do so much. I can’t tell you how aggravating it was to pretend to be your friend. Ich.” She pretended to shiver. “Anyway, we have quite the show planned for you.”

Her phone buzzed, and she looked down at the screen, smiling.
