“It’s time.”

I tried to sit up, but my head hurt too much, and the way my wrists had been bound made it impossible.

Tracy turned on the television. Brightness from the images on the screen filled the room as my world turned to terror.

My parents were tied to chairs in their own kitchen while Tim paced back and forth. He stopped and slowly raised a blade to my mom’s cheek, tracing it across her flesh.

The terror of what was before me nearly paralyzed me. But I had something I hadn’t held for a long time.

Hope.

Tim turned around and faced the camera, ducking down. His head became larger than life, and I winced. He looked exactly like I remembered, only more sadistic.

And small, weak, and narcissistic.

That grin was so knowing, welcoming the pain he was about to inflict.

“Don’t do what he says, Sadie. We’ll be fine,” my dad called out.

Tim whipped around and slapped my father’s cheek. “Shut up, old man.”

My jaw ached. “Lvmfalone.”

Tim spun around, looking into the camera. “Oh, really? What are you going to do about it, Sadie? You want me to leave your daddy alone?”

I spat at the camera angled directly at me.

Damn it. I wished I could speak more clearly. The brain fog was lifting every second, but my mouth wouldn’t cooperate.

My dad stared directly into the camera at me. I could feel his strength. He wouldn’t go without a fight.

“I’m all for family reunions, but we should get things started.” Tim’s smile turned into a toothy grin as he adjusted the camera slightly. “Let’s start with your faithful wife. Shall we?”

“Mmmom.” I got the word out. “I love you.”

My mom’s smile brightened the screen. “We love you too, Sadie.”

It was as if those words gave me the strength I needed.

Tim stretched his arm wide and started to swing, but before he could land the punch, a loud crash sounded through the video.

My eyes searched the screen for any clues. Tim still stood in front of my mother, but he was frozen. A loud thud echoed, and breaking glass reverberated through the speakers as Tracy gasped.

Two masked, faceless men entered the room. They towered over Tim and my parents.

Heavily armed.

Tim lunged at one of them with a knife while the other took direct aim.

Bang.

One shot.

Tracy screamed as her brother crumpled to the floor. The camera captured everything as tears slowly fell down his sister’s cheeks.

“My daughter. My daughter,” my mom screamed as Tracy knelt in front of the television, crying. “Help her.”

I wiggled over to Tracy, trying to kick her in the head with my feet, but that only made her bolt upright.
