And Sadie was worth it all.

She wiggled on my lap as the sun went down as slowly as it rose.

The fiery sun, with its golden orb over the horizon, brushed the clouds with subtle hues of orange, pink, and lavender. It felt like the world had been holding its breath for this moment. The breeze had stilled, only leaving the sweet smell of leaves to drift around us.

Sadie wore a simple plaid shirt dress that fluttered playfully over her lap as she scooted on mine. Her long, dark hair cascaded into a simple braid tied with a matching red ribbon. I couldn’t help but fall in love with her a little more as her full mouth swept across my lips.

I didn’t want to rush tonight. It would only happen once, and every second of it mattered to me.

Sugar Beans barked in the distance as the last of the light drifted to a quiet darkness.

Sadie lifted her head from my chest and let out a deep sigh. “Beautiful sunset, as always.”

I nodded, taking her in. “Think about our future often?”

“All the time,” she said softly, smiling. “I know without a doubt that you’re my future.”

“And this is all for us.” I squeezed her gently. “I’m so proud of you, Sadie. It’s not easy to go back to school.”

“I’m just lucky they took my first two years. I only have a year left and then nine months for the certification. No biggie.” She waggled her brows. “When I have you to come home to on the weekend.”

She rolled her hips into me, and I cupped her butt. “Damn, girl. You’re making things tough right now.”

Sadie giggled and smiled. “Do you have something in mind for our future I should know about?”

My heart raced, and my palms got clammy. This was the moment I’d been waiting for since I woke up in the hospital.

Sadie was the first person I saw. She was the first person to tell me how much she loved me.

And how mad she was at me. The thought made me chuckle.

My eyes opened to see Sadie’s beautiful face searching mine for recognition, and the moment I smiled, she squealed and leaned in to kiss me.

It was the most beautiful thing in this world.

Until tonight.

Tonight was going to be magical.

“I’ve been thinking about things a lot,” I confessed. My hands traveled along her spine.

Her eyes darkened into a stormy look of desire, and she let a little flirty pout flutter across her lips. “Should we make our way back to the house?”

That sounded better than anything in the world, except for one small thing.

I looked toward the barn, noticing the strung lights inside had flicked on.

Ian had always been great at following instructions.

“Well, whatever you have planned, I know it will be amazing.” She nodded with a big grin. “And I say yes to all the chickens and goats.”

“All the goats?”

Sadie nodded and winked. “All the goats and kids.”

“It’s time I show you something, Sadie.” I stood up and slowly let her feet touch the ground.

“What are you talking about?” She slowly spun around to see a beautiful glow from the barn.
