“Hello, is this Werin?”

“This is her. Who is this calling from my brother’s residence?”

“My apologies, this is Mia. Your brother’s nanny. We were hoping that you could join us for dinner tomorrow evening.”

“Tomorrow evening? That’s a bit of a last-minute invitation, don’t you think?”

“Yes, of course, I understand if you won’t be able to make it, considering how last minute it is. We just had something come up recently that is a cause for celebration.”

“Oh … what’s that?”

“Well, it’s a bit of a surprise. Can you be here tomorrow at 1900?”

“If you aren’t going to tell me over the phone what’s going on … I guess I don’t have a choice, do I?”

“If that’s how you feel, I suppose not.”

“Fine, I will be there.” She hung up before Mia could even say thank you.

“Well, that was an interesting exchange. She didn’t seem upset at all by the invitation.” Mia was a bit sarcastic as she stated this last bit.

He wiped his hand on the back of his head. “I suppose we will see tomorrow if this is a good idea or not.”

TWENTY-FOUR

MIA

Mia greeted Tharon when he got home from work with a long embrace and a quick kiss. “How was work?”

“It was fine, I suppose. I am just anxious for this dinner tonight.”

“I understand that, but hopefully, the meal I prepared is up to everyone’s standards, and it will help ease any tensions that exist.”

“I am certain that whatever meal you have made will be delicious. Where are Cian and Triat?”

“I arranged for them to stay with friends tonight since we are having this dinner. I was hoping that not having them here would ease the anxiety a bit and let any truths come out more easily.”

“That’s a good idea. Thank you. I didn’t want them to have to witness this dinner anyway.”

“I thought you would feel that way. Now, why don’t you go ahead and clean up for dinner? Your siblings should be here any minute.” It only took another thirty minutes or so for his brother to show up, followed almost immediately by his sister.

Mia graciously welcomed them to the home and showed them to the dining room. “Welcome to Tharon’s humble abode. I just set the table, and I will be bringing the food out now. Tharon should be in any minute. He was just washing up after work.”

She brought food to the table as Tharon joined them in the dining room and sat just after him. “I am sure Mia has welcomed you already, but I also wanted to say thank you for joining us tonight.”

“Enough with the pleasantries. What is this grand news that you have to share with us tonight?” Werin, Tharon’s sister, seemed particularly apprehensive.

“Well, since you seem so ready to hear the news. Mia and I are planning to become lifelong mates and expand the family one day.”

“I was hoping to have your help in planning the ceremony since you know this planet better than I do.” Mia addressed Werin before she had the opportunity to speak.

Werin pressed her hand to her chest. “You want me to help with this atrocity? I don’t think so. Tharon, you know I love you, but you can’t move on and marry again. Your wife died, and the children aren’t supposed to take a new mother.”

“Oh, posh. Some of our standards are so antiquated … I think it’s a wonderful idea. Brother, I am happy for you.” Rusang always had Tharon’s back.

“Let’s just eat, shall we? Mia made this wonderful spread, and I think we should enjoy it.” Tharon wanted to change the subject, but he kept this interaction in the back of his mind with the remainder of the plan he had put together.

The rest of the meal was very awkward as tension built in the room, and Tharon’s siblings left soon after they finished eating. The kids came home before they had a chance to discuss the dinner, and soon, they were busy with the nighttime routine.
