Tharon nodded. “Yes. How are you understanding me right now?”

Mia realized that his words ran smoother. “Good.”

He nodded and beckoned to Chaffron. Chaffron headed into the house while Tharon stayed with Mia.

“I take it you don’t know much about our society?”

“No, sir, I do not.”

Mia thought she saw a smirk pull slightly at his lips. But it happened too fast and was gone before she could be sure.

“No need to call me that. That’s what my men call me. You can call me Tharon, Mia. I will help you learn what you need to know as we go along. No need to overload you with too much. On-the-job training is better and lasts longer in our memory if we have to go through the action itself.”

“Thank you, si… Tharon. I agree with that completely.”

“Daddy!”

Mia and Tharon turned as a long-legged little girl came flying to her father’s side. It was the first time Mia had seen the commander smile.

“Are you ready for some introductions?” he asked his daughter. “Cian, this is Mia. She’ll be helping me take care of you and the house. Mia, this is Cian.”

The eight-year-old smiled brightly up at her. She didn’t offer any greeting, just a smile and a nod.

“And this young man is Triat.”

Mia turned to see Cian’s twin approach with Chaffron.

“Hello, Triat. I’m Mia. It’s nice to meet you.”

He stood right beside his dad and greeted Mia the same way his sister had. No touch, just a nod and sincere smile. “You as well.”

“I’ll show you around now.” Cian turned and walked toward the house.

Cian did not stop or wait. She simply kept going. Mia jogged to catch up with the driven girl.

After Cian had shownher the whole layout of the two-story house, she took Mia to the back porch and left her there.

The briskness of conversation and the abruptness of the children’s actions were throwing Mia off. She thought Chaffron had said the children were open.

My God, if this is opening up, then what’s closed-off like?

She didn’t want to find out. Or maybe they just didn’t like her already? Sure, they had smiled at her in greeting, but that may be the custom. It was hard to not have her mind come up with the worst scenarios while she stood there alone.

Cian came out this time with Triat. They carried a total of three silver bottles. Triat handed one to her.

“Thank you.”

He looked at her strangely and said nothing.

“It’s for if you’re thirsty,” Cian explained.

“Like water?”

Mia received another strange look.

“What’s water?”
