“It, uh, it’s what hydrates us Earthlings.”

“Oh, yes. Then this is like your water.”

Mia nodded with a smile and stopped herself from saying thanks again.

The twins seemed to be comfortable in the silence, but Mia was not.

“What do you do for fun?”

“The usual,” Cian said with a shrug.

“And what’s that? It’s been a while since I was a kid,” Mia prodded.

“Collect things, obstacle courses, participate in the community.”

“What type of games do you like to play?” Mia received a confused look from them once again. “You know, like Rambo, tag, hide-and-seek?”

“Nothing we are familiar with,” Triat answered from the railing.

Mia wondered if all of the Tor’vian children were as mature as these two or if it was just what the commander expected from them.

“Maybe I’ll have to show you sometime. You say you like obstacle courses?”

They both nodded and walked closer to her.

She had an idea.

Mia put her hand on her chin and pretended to think really hard. She stroked her chin methodically. “Hmm, let's see. I think one of the games may interest you. Especially if you like nonstop competition.”

“Really? Can you teach us?”

“Let’s go to the yard.”

They followed her eagerly, making Mia happy to finally see some change of emotion.

She explained the simple rules of tag and started it off.

They took to it quickly and made a competition between each other.

As Mia watched Cian and Triat chase each other around, running over and through things to escape one another, she felt that this was a good fit. That everything was going to be fine.

She smiled, listening to the two of them giggle as Cian almost caught her brother. Mia looked beyond the playing children and saw Tharon walking onto the porch.

Mia noticed his look of confusion when he walked out. He shot her a look, then another to the kids. He took a quick step toward the stairs as if he were about to call them in and ask what in the hell they were doing. He stopped himself and watched his children while Mia watched him.

She couldn’t help but observe how attractive Tharon was. He watched his children with a joy that was obvious. Maybe he wasn’t as cold as she had assumed.

THREE

THARON

Tharon had no idea what his children were doing, but it had been a long time since he had seen them this jovial.

He watched them run around, chasing each other until they were almost breathless with laughter. It looked to be a game of wits and quickness, but he wasn’t sure. His eyes ventured back to Mia.

He was sure this game was something she’d introduced to them, and it seemed to be harmless. Plus, the sound of their laughter made the house feel complete again.

Tharon watched Mia walking toward him as Cian and Triat continued to chase each other like giggling fools.
