“Earplugs.” I stretched my hand to her, and she took it. “Your ears will need the extra protection.”

She smiled and plugged them into her ears. “That’s very thoughtful of you. Thank you.”

I stilled and looked at her. Her smile was so contagious, it pulled a smile from me too. “You’re welcome.” I slid the goggles over her head and rested the temples on her ears. “You look like a badass.”

She ginned. “I am a badass.”

“Let’s practice, shall we?” I stood up and stretched my hand out to her. She took my hand and straightened, then we stood several feet away from the paper target before I handed the gun to her. “How does that feel?”

She gauged the weight of the gun and shrugged. “Lighter than I thought it would.”

“Perfect. There are only two rules when you use a gun: Always treat a gun like it’s loaded.”

She popped her head. “And the second rule?”

“Never point your gun at someone or something you don’t intend to shoot.”

Her eyes moved between the gun in her hand and me. Things had changed between us, neither of us had admitted that to the other, but we both knew it. Still, I wondered if I was training her for the moment, she would drill a bullet through my heart.

She raised her brows and raised the tip of her gun in my direction. “Aren’t you afraid I’ll shoot you?”

“Anyone with a gun can be a rival.” I pushed the gun back to the paper target with the tip of my finger. “But I know you won’t shoot me.”Not now anyway.

“Can we get started?”

“Sure.” I stepped behind her. “Part your feet shoulder-width apart. This will help make sure your feet are planted firmly.”

She did just as I said.

“Now aim at your target.”

She raised her gun to her chest and pointed it at the target.

I stepped behind her, placing my hand on the gun and bringing it a little higher. She tensed from my touch and released a small shaky breath.

“Relax, dorogaya. The weapon is in your hand and you’re in control.”

Closing her eyes, she inhaled and exhaled. When she opened her eyes again, the tension in her shoulders eased.

“Keep your eyes on the target and press your finger against the trigger.”

A bang echoed in the field, followed by the grunt of rock pigeons as they spread their wings and soared in the opposite direction of the wind.

Giselle took off her goggles and peered at the target, then she pouted. “I didn’t hit it.”

I smiled. “But you managed to scare the pigeons away. It’s progress if you ask me.”

She snorted, curled her small hand into a fist and punched me lightly. “Don’t mock me.”

“I’m not. No one’s good with a gun on their first try.”

She narrowed her eyes on me. “How was your first time shooting a gun?”

“I shot Sergey in the leg.”

An incredulous smile parted her lips. “You’re joking.”

“I am not. I’d misfired and the bullet shot through Sergey. I’d panicked from all the blood.”
