She broke into an uncontrollable laugh. “How old were you?”

“I was eight. I killed my first man at eleven.”

She stopped laughing and gaped at me. “That’s very young. I mean, I can’t imagine an eleven-year-old killing someone.”

“That’s how it is in the mafia and that’s the only way to survive.”

She both stared silently at the paper target she’d missed. “If you had a choice, would you have chosen a life outside of the mafia?”

I gave it a thought. The mafia was all I knew. I was born into a world of bloodshed, and I was going to die in it. If I wasn’t lucky, I would even die from it. The dangers that lurked around were limitless, but I’d become addicted to the bloodshed and crime that surrounded me.

My answer was a simple, “No.” The sullen expression on Giselle’s face showed she didn’t like my answer, but luckily, she didn’t press the topic. “Let’s go back to training.”

She was about taking her position when my phone buzzed in my pocket. When I took it out, Maxim’s number flashed on my screen.

“What’s up, man?” I answered.

“Where are you, bro?”

“At the shooting range. Is there a problem?”

Sergey said something I couldn’t make sense of in the background and Maxim replied. “Dah.”

“What’s going on there?”

“Get your ass over here, man. We caught one of those Italian bastards. The cunt insists he won’t speak to anyone except you.”

I glanced at Giselle. She seemed to notice the worry in my expression because she mouthIs there a problem?

“I’ll be there in twenty.” I hung up, walked back to the tree and readied our bag to leave. It was almost mid-day and the afternoon sun blazed without mercy. “We’re leaving.”

“Why?”

I took the gun from her and strapped it in the holster on my chest. “Something’s up. I need to get to my brothers. Akin and Danil will take you home.”

She pulled her brows together but didn’t voice a protest. We strolled down the hill to where our cars were parked. “Make sure she gets home safe,” I instructed Danil, then I kissed her head. “I’ll be home before dinner.”

Raising herself on her toes, she curled her arm around my neck and kissed my cheeks. “Don’t get hurt.”

“I won’t.” I pulled away, got into my Bugatti and drove to Sergey’s mansion downtown. It took me only ten minutes because I drove like a madman.

I headed straight to the basement of Sergey’s mansion and found all three of my brothers with their sleeves rolled up and their hands bloody.

“What’s going on here?”

They craned their gazes to me. “The fucker has a death wish,” Vlad said, his eyes red with murder.

The Italian looked at him then snickered. His swollen eyelids hid his eyes, his teeth scarlet and his skin blue. “Only a coward fears death.”

Vlad moved to lunge at him. I strode across the room quickly and held my brother back. “Leave him to me.”

Vlad’s angry gaze never left the Italian’s, but he reluctantly backed down.

“What happened here?” I asked, planting my hand on my waist and trying to understand the scenario in front of me.

“They tried to kidnap Lilianna. The others ran away, this one wasn’t so lucky,” Maxim narrated, his jaw twitching.

I turned my back to my brothers and faced the Italian. “Why do you keep attacking my family when Angelo’s not in Chicago?”
