The hurt in her voice caused my chest to clench. Images of my father’s beat-up car flashed through my mind. I couldn’t help the guilt that crashed over me.

If she had never gotten with Dylan, would things have turned out differently?

I should have tried harder to pull them apart instead of feeding into my own obsession with her. Tried to do anything to get her away from us.

And now, we took away everything for her.How could I possibly ever repay her for what we have stolen?

“I’ll figure something out,” I vowed. Her eyes shot toward me, hope flashing through them. “I will, just give me time. Remember our promise.”

She nodded slowly.

“Here,” she said, taking one of the bracelets off her wrist. I hadn’t fully noticed them when she came in, but now that we were close enough, I could make out the threaded material with a small, half-heart dangling from it.

My breath caught in my throat as she put it on me.

“Is this a friendship bracelet?” I asked, my throat tightening.

“Something to remember our promises to each other,” she said, showing me hers. Then she guided her charm to mine, and they snapped together, forming a heart.

“I’ll never forget,” I vowed. She gave me a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes, like she knew what was going on in my mind.

I owed her this much. A way for her to get her life back together… but in order to do that, I had to break a promise.

Vic

We had been cut off.

Iturned on my heels, firing a shot at Hiram. The sound ripped through the room as the bullet hit the stone behind him.

I wasn’t aiming to kill, and the shot was far off, but it was enough to cause Hiram to freeze. As if on instinct, he put his hands up, showing he wasn’t a threat.

Hilarious, really. After all, it was his crimes in the past that caused us to end up right where we were.

“How many points do you think killing an Architect is worth, Wolff?” I asked, taking a step closer to Hiram. Excitement flared through me.This was it. Everything I’d ever wanted.

Kohl let out a breathy laugh as they stood behind me. I heard the sound of them brushing the dirt off their pants. A nonchalant move that made it obvious just how much they despised his father.

There was no rush to save him. Not that they could.

“Enough to win a game for sure. Can you imagine what the views would be like for that?” Kohl said.

I didn’t take my eyes off Hiram as I twisted my wrist to get a look at my tracker.

In the corner, where the number of viewers normally were, was a big, red zero. No way all viewers would have fled, especiallywhen things were just getting good.

We had been cut off.

The Company would do anything to save its ass in order to continue bringing in obscene money for this country and themselves.

“It would seem like the place you’ve dedicated your life to is cutting ties,” I mused, making a show of aiming my gun right at Hiram’s chest. “How does it feel? Knowing that no one is coming for you?”

The gravity of the situation seemed to dawn on him then. His eyes widened and his face turned impossibly red. He looked like he was about to blow and I couldn't wait to get a front row seat.

“You sneaky little—”

“Uh oh, I wouldn’t say something you mightregret,” I said playfully, waving my gun.

“Kohl,” he growled, his eyes shifting to the figure behind me. “Please, talk some sense into her!”
