“You almost killed her father,” Kohl said. “I saw your car that night. You know you ruined her life?”

“All of it,” I said, anger boiling under my skin. I couldn’t take it any more. All of the pent up anger. The sadness. The grief. It was too much. “You took it all from me. Every penny drained from my accounts so I could keep his husk of a body still alive. And for what, jealousy? Pitiful revenge for my mother picking someone other than yo—”

“He deserved it!” Hiram’s rage was palpable. His voice bounced off the walls and struck my chest. “If he really cared for her, he would have noticed the signs! If she had just kept her promise to me, I would have seen it! She would still be alive today!”

“So your answer to that was trying tomurderhim?!” My voice tore at my throat, all the pain and anger was coming out of me, bursting through the seams. My body was shaking with the force of trying to keep it contained.

“It had to be done!” he spat. “Don’t you want revenge for her? Don’t you want to make the man who made you lose your mother pay?”

I stepped forward, my hand shaking as I pointed the gun at his head.

“She never loved my father or me,” I hissed. “She was passive. Never once caring about meorhim. Sometimes I even doubted if she was my real mother. Her death was a fucking godsend. It reminded me that with or without her, my life was the same. At first I mourned, but you know what really made me want to kill you?”

He stayed silent, his eyes narrowing at me.

“That fact that it wasyourname she called out on her deathbed.” My voice broke at the end. The memory still haunted me. It wasn’t me or dad she cared about.Just him.“I couldn’t help but replay it in my mind over and over again, and once the sting of her death wore off, you know what the first thing I did was?”

Realization dawned on him. His eyes widened, and his jaw fell slack.

“You tried to whore yourself out to my son,” he breathed.

“Don’t you fucking talk like that to her,” Kohl barked, their hand coming to grip my shoulder.Like a good guard dog.

“You’re right,” I said with a laugh. “But somehow you were a step ahead of me.”

It was Hiram’s turn to let out a bitter laugh that caused my insides to twist.

How could he still be so evil, even with all the odds stacked against him?

“I enjoyed it,” he said through laughs. “I replay it in my head. The moment your sorry excuse for a father realized what I was doing. Better yet, when he saw my face? Ha! I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.”

I fired the gun, aiming for his face, but it flew right past it.

Kohl stepped forward, their face hard.

“Don’t!” Hiram growled. “I’m your father, Kohl, for fuck’s sake, we share the same blood! Stop her!”

Kohl

Forever broken.

“It doesn’t matter if we share the same blood or not,” I growled, closing the space between us. “You’re a fucking disgrace. You hid behind your title, ruining lives for something that happened in the games. About someone who wouldn’t even look twice at you. Don’t you realize how fucking stupi—”

His hand shot out, squeezing my throat. His face twisted with anger. His eyes were wide, and his breathing came out in pants.

I had seen my dad angry before. Angry at me. Angry at my brother. Angry at his job.

But this was something completely different.

Father wasn’t just angry, he was furious. He was hurt.

“You wouldn’t understand,” he spat. “You’re a spoiled fucking brat that only knows how to whine and complain. You entered the games and were supposed to prove yourself to the world, but instead you went and fucked it all up.”

“I fucked it up?” I choked out as I tried to push him away. His arm was shaking with the ferocity of the grip he had on me. “You were ajealous, weak man that murdered an innocent father and ruined Vic’s life just because you couldn’t get what you want—”

“You and your brother are a fucking stain on my life,” he seethed. “I should have ended it as soon as I knew that whore was pregnant with you. I thought I could pretend. Thought I could create the perfect Legacy family. Raise kids that would become the perfect clones of myself. But you’ve only disappointed me.”

It became hard to breathe. Tears filled my eyes, and the strength left my limbs.
