But of course, just like the last few years of my life, the world justhadto prove how unlucky I was.

Surprise rocketed through me as the purple-masked Seeker leaned over my hiding space, their fingers just barely grazing the butt of the gun.

Are you kidding me? Can’t I get a break from this psycho?

Their mask was still stained with Jenna’s blood.

I tried to stay quiet. Tried to mold myself against the wall in hopes they would justpass me.

But then their head turned to stare directly at me.

Fuck.

I acted without thinking, my fist connecting with the side of their head as I launched myself at them. Anger at their quickness to bludgeon Jenna to death combined with my fear mixed painfully, fueling the fight in me.

The Seeker made a move for the gun, but I was quicker, grabbing the weapon and aiming it directly at their chest. “Move, now.”

“Hey—hey—just calm down. You don’t have to—” They raised their hands, backing away from the booth slowly, and I put my foot on the counter, my eyes flicking down the aisles of games for their shitty, sadistic friends. They were close enough for me to see them but busy.

A gunshot would probably change that.

This was it. I could kill them. Get them off my fucking back, even just for the time being.

I wanted my motivation for killing them to be for Jenna. I knew there would be consequences, but I would hope that deep down, I’d be able to overcome my fear of them to shoot.

Tears stung my eyes and made my chest tight as my finger hovered over the trigger.

I’m so sorry, Jenna,I thought. It wasn’t the fear of the consequences that stopped me, it was the need tosurvive. The need to win this thing and come out on top.

I cursed under my breath, throwing myself over the counter and making a break for it. My boots skidded in a pool of blood, nearly bringing me to the ground. I shoved the gun into the pocket of my hoodie.

“Should have killed me when you had the chance, rabbit!” the Seeker shouted, their footsteps mirroring mine.

My adrenaline-addled and panic-filled mind thought it sounded like Kohl.

But I knew Kohl. There’s no way that they could’ve killed Jenna, not like that. They would be in here like me, a Ghost. Or watching.

If they were in here as a Seeker—I don’t know what I’d do.

I’d made a point of hitting the gym pretty hard, the cardio machines especially leading up to the games. All that dedication served me well now as I whipped around the corner, speeding around a Tilt-A-Whirl and a rocking boat-like ride in my futile hope to find somewhere to hide.

Bodies littered the park, members of staff in their yellow bulletproof vests helping to clean up. In a couple hours, when people really started to get desperate, this place would be deserted. Not even the Custodians would enter the arena the last couple of hours before sunrise.

My eyes caught on the sign for the building up ahead—the Mirror Maze.

The Seeker was still too close for me to be comfortable, and after I’d seen them take out Jenna without a second thought, I knew if they got their hands on me, I was a goner.

I couldn’t exactly shoot them while I was running full tilt either, so basically, I was fucked.

I took the steps into the mirror maze two at a time, my pursuer coming at me just as quickly. I sprinted through the first stage of the maze, my masked face staring back at me as my hair whipped around corners. I looked every bit the anxious rabbit that my username promised.

Small. Panicked. Prey in the hands of a predator.

I gripped the side of the mirrored wall as I turned sharply around the corner, helping to propel me into the next hallway—and directly into a mirror. I hit it with so much force, it shattered on impact, tossing me to the floor.

The Seeker laughed, the sound bouncing off the glass. “That sounded like it hurt.”

I rolled, pushing myself to my feet, but they grabbed the back of my shirt, yanking me backward before shoving me into another mirror.
