An uneasiness passed through the other two, but Dylan seemed unconvinced.

I may not have been able to convince Dylan, but they knew for sure that the man wouldn’t give two shits if they didn’t do what they came here to do.

“Quickly,” Pink said to him. “It will take five minutes, tops. If we don’t find anyone, we move on. You know my mother will disown me if I don’t have at least two kills under my belt.”

Something that should have sounded so horrific coming from his mouth was so normalized that it was almost laughable.

That’s right. Why was I trying so hard to convince them when their parenting and this world had already done it for me?

“There are only a few hours left,” I said with a shrug. “Look, there’s only a third of them left.”

I pressed a few buttons on my tracker, letting the holographic screen pull up the amount of time we still had as well as the percentage of Killers versus victims.

More than a third had gotten their victims, meaning the rest of the Killers were also the ones cleaning up the rest of them and leaving none for those like Pink.

Dylan was my main concern right now, but with the way the numbers were looking, he wouldn’t be the only Killer I had to look out for.

“Who knows,” I said and shook my tracker so the screen disappeared. “Maybe yours is already dead.”

He paused for a moment before letting out a sigh.

“Fine, but we get in and out in ten minutes, tops,” he said, giving a meaningful look to the other two, who gave him sharp nods.

“Great,” I said through clenched teeth and pushed past them.

The garden itself was well… a garden. The entire roof was open, letting the moonlight stream in from above. Without the moonlight, it would have been pitch black. There was the sound of running water off in the distance and trees with hanging leaves all over. Everything was so overgrown that I had to push past many of the plants to continue down the path. Though just like the outside, many of the plants had been dead or in various stages of dying.

It caused the whole place to reek.

They followed behind me as I pushed through the overgrown bushes. There was no one. Not a soul except the four of us. All of our glowing masks shone in the darkness, giving away our exact location. And yet no one was running.

I almost started to panic when there was no sign of any living creature. But then there was a sharp squeak and the sound of footsteps running.

I turned to look at the group behind me.

“There’s one!” I whispered. “Go now—”

My voice was cut off by Dylan stepping forward and gripping my shirt.

The act caused my heart to stop in my chest.

“What are you—”

“You are an embarrassment,” he spat at me. “I’ve already earned the title. I was here to keepyourreputation, but it seems you've mistaken me for a fool.”

“I don’t know what—”

I tried to push him away, but Pink and Yellow were by my sides in an instant.

“We are all Seekers, you can’t—”

Pain flashed through me as Dylan hit me square in the jaw.

Before the Games

Ikicked off my heels, groaning as the cool air met my abused feet.
