“Oh? Don’t tell me you’re really going to try this? For a Ghost? Do you know how embarrassing it is to see you drooling all over this bitch? I guess some people find sloppy seconds hot, butdamn, the things my comments said about you two—”

“Dylan, let her up!” The terror in my voice surprised even myself.

“Why do you care so much?” he asked, his eyes narrowing as he lifted her again to let her breathe.

“Don’t let Dad continue to run your life like this.” I begged.

There was a point growing up where I looked up to Dylan. When the blind confidence he had was something more innocent. When the power he had to make every single thing go his way was somagical.

Sometimes, if I squinted hard, I could still believe that little boy who used to push me on swings was still in there somewhere.

But that time had long since passed.

The look on his face as he held Vic, gasping and whimpering just over the surface of the water, solidified once and for all that the brother I knew was dead. Whoever—whatever the fuck had come back out of the arena wasn’t Dylan.

It was a replica of our father in his place.

But unlike Father, Dylan had no ambition of his own. He continued to take orders from our worthless dad, even going so far as to kill someone hemust’vehad feelings for at some point.

And for what?

Was Father’s approval really worth selling his soul over? Or was it the people watching? The fame that awaited us outside the metal walls of the arena that called to him like a whisper in the night?

“Oh, don’t do that,” Dylan said with a groan. “I was having so muchfun, and now you’re ruining it. I hate when you get all up on your high horse.”

“Just let her go,” I said, taking another step forward. His answer was to pull Vic closer to him and force her to look at me.

“What d’you think?” he whispered to her. “I don’t think we’ve had our fun yet, do you?”

“Fuck off,” she growled, baring her teeth.

Dylan laughed.

“Still have that useless fight in you, huh?” he asked. “Maybe if you beg for Kohl to come save you, I’ll consider letting you go. At least then you would’ve learned your fucking place.”

The silence was pressing as Vic slammed her mouth shut. Broken only by her terrified breathing.

Just do it.My eyes pleaded to her silently. I gripped the taser in my hand, suddenly fearful that if I tased him while he was drowning her, that I may hurt her as well.

Just say it.

But the fire in her eyes told me she wouldn’t.

“See, this is why you shouldn’t have thrown your family away for aGhost,” Dylan said with a huff. “I’ll rectify that. She’ll be my first kill tonight.”

Then, with more force than before, he forced her head back in. Her scream, even muted by the water could be heard throughout the tunnel.

It was the thing that spurred me into action. I crossed the space between us, intent on tackling him to the ground, but a smile spread across his face. One so bone-chilling that it caused my blood to freeze in my veins.

“I knew you couldn’t leave it alone—”

I cut him off by slamming my body into his.

It was too late to turn back.

Whatever he was planning, I would just have to take it. I tried to keep a grip on my taser, but as soon as Dylan twisted to fight me, it was knocked from my hands.

I gripped at his hair, forcing his head back and delivering a punch. Instead of trying to protect his face, he let me hit him while wrapping his arm around my waist and slamming me to the ground.
