I haven’t been the most honest myself, was what I wanted to say. Their vulnerability was almost enough to make me spill everything that had been bottling up inside.

They squeezed my hand back, an action that caused my heart to set alight.

“You know…” They trailed their gaze, looking out at the arena. “If our lives weren’t on the line, this may have been a bit romantic.”

I couldn’t help the laugh that fell from my lips.Of course, Kohl would try to make me feel better about the shitty situation. It only made me fall harder for them than I already had.

I hadn’t known it was possible to need them any more than I had for the last few years, but ever since the house of mirrors, I felt closer to them than I ever had.

I also worried for them more than I ever intended.

I wanted to be selfish. Wanted to be able to be cold and shrug them off when needed to get ahead.

But all I could think about was my initial carved into their chest. Their face as they looked up at me through their lashes. Their flushed face as they begged me for mercy.

Seeing them like that was everything I thought I could never have. They were a selfish delusion I only allowed myself when the lights were off, and I was snuggled deep in my soft duvet.

“If I had a choice on our first date, I’d go for something a bit more simple than fucking being covered in blood and on the dirty floor,” I said with a laugh.

“Oh ya? What would that be? Brunch? A coffee shop? Library date?” they teased, pushing their side against me. The small, teasing gesture lifted the weight on my shoulders, even if it was just a bit.

“No, somethingbetter,” I said in a teasing tone. “I think it’d be nice to take my dog for a walk. I ever have the perfect studded collar in mind.”

“A dog? What about Bingsoo? I can’t imagine them agreeing to adogin the house.”

I gave them a long look. When it finally dawned on them, bright red traveled up their neck. I gave them a wink and let the laugh that had been bubbling in my chest out.

The pings on both our trackers told me the audience liked our playful banter as much as I did.

Just for fun, I pulled up the comments to show Kohl.

“Oh my god, look, someone even offered to send us one if we—”

“You fucker!”

We both turned at the loud voice. Kohl moved in front of me almost immediately, blocking me from view.

I leaned to the side, taking in the tall men with pink and yellow masks.

They were with Dylan.

Alarm bells rang in my head, and my legs itch to move. Did they know about Dylan? They had to have, right? Or else they wouldn’t be here…

“You guys were holding me up, I had no choice,” Kohl said, their voice light and not at all like they just watched their brother get shot. “Plus, the taser didn’t hurtthatmuch, right?”

“We were knocked out!” Pink said, throwing his hands in the air.

“Yeah, we could have died!” Yellow crossed his arms over their chest.

“But you didn’t,” Kohl said. “Now, if you excuse me, we have to go. Last I heard, Dylan was going to go find you two, so—”

“See, that’s what I don’t get,” Yellow said, his head tilting to the side. “I’m pretty sure Dylan wouldn’t have let you off, especially after what your father was willing to give us for offing that pretty little rabbit you were hiding. Don’t think you can fool us by giving her a Killer mask. We aren’tdumb.”

Their father?Anger shot through me. I pushed forward, ready to give them a verbal beating, but Kohl held me back.

“He called Dylan off,” they said. “I made a different deal. One that you’re not privy to. Now run off before the architect gets mad.”

They looked at each other, obviously lost at what to do without their leader.
