Kohl turned slightly, gripping my shoulders and readying us to make our break. Then the pings on their trackers cut through the air.

They stood still, their chests not even moving.

“That’s Dylan’s mask,” Pink breathed.

“No,” Yellow whispered his hands coming to clutch his head. “No. No.N0!”

They were charging us before we had a chance to ready ourselves. With a yelp, I turned and pulled Kohl along with me.

“God, my father’s such a fucking prick!”

Kohl

Down, boy.

Ishould have killed them.

I should have fucking killed them.

It was all I could think as I ran after Vic, Dylan’s lackeys chasing after us with a vengeance.

At the time, all I was thinking about was getting to Vic before my brother did, but now I wish that I had just taken the precaution to kill them.

I won’t make the same mistake twice.

Vic was faster than me, faster than them, but I fell behind. So much so that it was only a few minutes until one of them tackled me from behind.

We fell to the ground in a heap, pushing the air out of my lungs, but unlike last time, I wasn’t going to allow myself to be overtaken. Not when Vic’s life was on the line and she had come so close to dying just moments before.

I promised her my life, and I would make damn sure that she would make it out of the games.

I locked my arms around his neck, trying to replicate a move I had seen Dylan do so many times over, and when I finally got him into a headlock. He struggled against me, his words becoming a garbled mess in his throat. I felt the presence of Vic coming up to our side.

“Beat it, or I blow his brains out,” Vic warned, the sound of her cocking the gun filling the space between us.

Pink stopped thirty feet away from us, his eyes darting to me and then to Vic before settling on his friend.

What was she doing? The gun tucked in the back of my pants was accessible if I needed it. If anything, I would have preferred she ran away while I fought these two. I was confident in my ability to get at least one kill in after they lost their leader.

“I’m going to let you up,” I warned. “Be smart.”

He nodded, his hand coming to slap my arm three times. I let him go, watching his back as he crawled away from me.

The humiliating act caused a thrill to run through me. I stood slowly, unable to take my eyes off Pink as Yellow helped him up. I could kill them. Right then and there.

Vic had a gun, I had a gun. It’s the least they deserved for trying to hurt Vic. My hand twitched, the urge to grab my gun filling me.

“He’s in the tunnel of love,” I said, taking a step forward. “Shall I show you where?”

It should have pained me to even think about my brother. For the images of his dead body sinking to the bottom of the canal. But instead, all I could think about was the horror that would twist their faces. Of the shocked gasps they would have to conceal. They would be overcome with rage, but the shock would render them frozen.

And then, when they were least expecting it, I would raise the gun and—

“Down, boy,” Vic all but purred as she came to my side. “We don’t know what other consequences the games have in store for us.”

And just like that, the invisible leash she kept tied around my neck was yanked back.

Vic pointed the gun at them and raised her brows, daring them to try again. They cursed under their breath, both looking at each other before Yellow was finally the one to shake their head.
