Their heads got so big after the games. Made to believe they were the chosen ones. Special. A lie reinforced by the publicity they got when they entered society as “heroes.”

On the outside, it looked like they were just living their lives. But it was a lie, they were in this fucking arena as much as I was. They never fucking left. Never stopped playing.

Unlike my father. He’d tried his hardest to forget about what he had to do to survive. Not that it’d done him any good. Here we were, still playing.

No, that wasn’t his fault. It was Hiram’s. He’d dragged us all back in.

And now he was paying the price.

“Oh, I think it’ll change a lot,” I said breezily, nudging Kohl’s head with the muzzle of the gun. “But somehow I have the feeling you don’treallythink that I’ll end your Legacy here and now.” I clicked my tongue and trailed the gun down Kohl’s face, hovering it just over their lips.

God, they’d been so beautiful when I defiled them with a gun.

Kohl’s eyes widened, and their eyebrows pushed together. There was something beautiful going on in their head as they slowly put the pieces together.

I raised an eyebrow and opened my mouth, miming for them to do the same.

They did, allowing me to tease the gun at their lips and tongue before placing it back on their forehead.

It was the twinge of their lips and the relaxation of their body that told me my little pet had finally caught up.

That’s right, Kohl. Play with me, baby.

“You’ve already taken my son—isn’t that enough?” Hiram asked. “You know the pain of losing family, don’t make a mistake you will regret.”

A feral smile split my features. “What’s there to regret? You’ve takeneverythingfrom me. Why the fuck should I give up the opportunity to do the same to you?”

“Vic, please—” Kohl begged, the fear in their eyes had turned to something lighter. An excited flash in their eyes made heat flush up the back of my neck.

Filthy little freak.

Truthfully, if I’d truly wanted to kill Kohl, I’d had more than enough opportunity.

I knocked off the safety, putting my finger over the trigger.

“Wait! Wait! Okay, let’stalk!” Hiram shouted. “Money! It’s the money you want, right?”

“How about two parents and a life where I didn’t have to becomethis?” I said coolly. “How about a mom who wasn’t so hung up on you that she left me out to dry?”

“That wasn’t my fault. You think your mother was the only one who couldn’t stand what their life had become after we were separated?” There was a twinge to his voice, something more vulnerable than I thought someone like him would ever be capable of.

But it was too little, too late.

Hiram, just like me, had made his bed. But unlike him, I knew what I had to do to make my dream become a reality. He acted out of fear, cowardice.

I acted out of sheer revenge.

“That seems like a you problem,” I hissed, my eyes flicking down to Kohl as the lights started to flicker again. “Maybe in the next life we’ll meet again, kitten.”

Before the Games

This moment was supposed to be every young adult’s dream.

After twelve years of work, I’d walk across the stage, smile at the crowd, and go off with my diploma in hand to start my new life.

So why did it all feel so fuckingshallow?
