I know!I wanted to scream. But the words died on my tongue. Instead, panic filled me.

“But we are in this together!” I cried, my throat aching at the desperation in my voice. It was no use. I couldn’t hold back my fear or the pain her actions caused.

“No,” she said. “It’s never beenustogether. Ever since the crash, it’s been me and me alone, and I won’t let my dreams fall aside because my heart is weak.”

I didn’t know what to say. All I could do was beg that the love of my life wouldn’t put a bullet in my brain.

I can’t do it. I can’t be her savior. I thought I would do anything for her, but this—

“Victoria,” I said. “Please. I know it seems like you don’t have any options, but you do. I can hel—”

“I’m sorry, Kohl,” she said. “A point is a point.”

Vic

Maybe in the next life we’ll meet again, kitten.

The light flickered overhead, the soft buzzing that followed the fluorescents setting my teeth on edge.

Kohl’s eyes were wide with betrayal, which made my heart beat as quick as a rabbit in my chest, my breath coming in quick pants.

The instructions were clear. Kill them or lose. The sun would be up soon, I was running out of time.

“Please, Vic—”

I took a deep breath, trying to still my shaking hands as I pressed the gun to Kohl’s forehead. Slowly, deliberately, as I held their terrified eyes, I adjusted the stained bracelet on my wrist.

We both knew someone was pulling the strings of this game. Someone who wasn’t going to let their Legacy die with my finger on the trigger.

Kohl’s eyes followed the motion, catching on the sun-shaped charm as the lights went off.

It was as good as I could do without totally fucking over my last-ditch plan.

If anyone realized that I wasn’t willing to—

“Stop!” Hiram’s voice boomed, followed by a slam and the sound of feet shuffling over the concrete.

I squinted in the dim light provided from our masks.

When the lights came back on, blinding me momentarily, I had to blink to make sense of what I was seeing.

Hiram Wolff, his hair askew and suit rumpled like he’d had to fight his way in here, stood panting in our tight corridor. What’d looked to be a solid wall before had slid open to reveal separate tunnels.

No wonder they hadn’t turned off our cameras.

The tunnels wethoughtwe’d infiltrated must’ve been just another setup they’d put here to see who was daring enough to go for an adventure. Therealtunnels hidden within plain sight, just beyond the walls.

No matter, it wasn’t the knowledge of the game that made a burst of euphoric satisfaction rise in my chest. It was that Hiram looked positivelydesperate.

Good.

I’d waited what felt like a lifetime for this moment. For him to finally realize thatI,the person whose life hedestroyed, would be the one to do the very same to him.

“You think this will change anything, little girl?” Hiram spat, taking a slow step toward me.

He was panicking, trying to stall. I could see right through him, but Idoubtedhe could see anything that was going on inside my mind.

That was the thing about victors like him.
