Her eyes shifted from her reflection to look down at me with a frown. She didn’t like to be read like she did others, which made it all the more satisfying when I got it right.

Poor Quinn needed someone to believe in her, and I would be sick to my stomach if I couldn’t provide that to someone who had done so much for me.

“Are you ready?” she asked. “There’s no going back after this. You still have time to back out.”

“Ready to ruin it all?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.

A smile spread across her face. “Not ruin,” she said. “Think of this as your rebirthing ceremony.”

Quinn

“Are you sure you want to go through with this?” I asked for the umpteenth time as we looked over her apartment.

She stayed still in the middle of her living room, looking over every surface, cataloging just about everything about the apartment.

“Stop asking me that like I’ll change my mind,” she said, though she didn’t bother to look back at me.

My phone vibrated on the table to my right. I glanced at it, taking in the barrage of messages that were blowing up my phone. I grabbed it, looking over the notifications.

All of them were from Rolf, the first being a screenshot of an article.

Warlord’s Second In-Command Found Washed-up Off the Shore at Brandford Beach.

Rolf even took the time to highlight the space where it said, “missing eyeballs.”

Call me.

I know you have your phone.

If I don’t get a call from you in five minutes, I’m sending people to decommission your ass.

I let out a groan when Rolf’s name flashed across my screen.

Blake was by my side in seconds, her eyes widened as she looked down at my screen.

“I feel like I should be worried,” she said. “Is that..?”

“My handler,” I said, taking a deep breath. “He just found out about what we had done.”

She took a startled step back. “Found out?” she asked. “The body was thrown into the fucking ocean. Russell has a million enemies, how does he know it’s you?”

I sent her a bitter smile.

“He knows my signature,” I said. “It’s okay, I knew he would find out.”

A semi-lie. I knew he would find out, just notnow.I had expected Russell’s team to try and clean up whatever they could before it leaked to the press, but maybe they had been too slow.

Or maybe it’s Karma.Butthatwas something I didn’t want to believe.

I took a deep breath and accepted the call.

“You killed a fucking warlord’s second in command,” he growled. “This wasnota part of your contract. What the fuck came over you?”

“He was hurting my target,” I said simply. “And you and I both know the target and her information comes first.”

“That’s why you were in a fucking safe house!” his voice boomed over the phone, causing my ears to ring. “I had it fucking covered, Quinn. I had people on their way.”

“You had people coming to help?” I asked, the thought of him sending backup to keep me and my target safe sent a warmth bursting through me.
