He was going to help me?

It hurt. Pain radiated through my chest and traveled up my throat, sinking it’s claws into my flesh and causing everything I wanted to say to get stuck.

“Of course I was coming to fucking help, you idiot,” he huffed. “And now you fucked it up! I knew you were up to some shady shit when you were getting that money. Why didn’t you tell me?”

Blake leaned closer to hear what he was saying, but I pulled the phone away from my ear and put it on speaker for her.

There was nothing to hide anymore.

“You know why I didn’t,” I said. I couldn’t.

There was a bitter chuckle from the other end.

“Because I would have your ass for it,” he said. “Tell me honestly, Quinn. What’s your plan? This isn’t like you.”

I bit the inside of my cheek. A part of me wanted to tell him. The child that was still close to him. The child that still looked up to him and thought him to be the most powerful person in the world.

But the assassin who had seen just what he was capable of, knew I couldn’t. Knew that if I spilled even the slightest hint of what I was going to do, that his people would be tearing down our door within minutes.

An idea popped into my head. One so perfect that it caused a giddiness to burst in my chest.

Two birds, one stone.

“I’m leaving it behind,” I said with confidence. “Everything. After all these years, Rolf, I can’t do it anymore.”

“No, Quinn, shut up. Don’t you dare do what I—”

“Thank you, Rolf. For everything.” For the first time, the words felt sincere, and they caused my throat to clench. “I wish we knew each other in different circumstances.”

“Quinn, I swear to God. I will send agents to decommission you right now. Don’t make me do it.”

“Do it,” I dared. “Send them, I’ll be waiting. You know where to find me.”

I hung up and threw my phone to the side to meet Blake’s shocked face.

God, I couldn’t get over how beautiful she was. Her hair was fluffed up with how many times she ran her hands through it. Her face flushed with panic and her pink lips open, shock spreading across her features.

“Assassins?” she squeaked. “They are sendingassassinsafter us?”

She’s so fucking cute.

I placed my hand on her hair, ruffling the soft brown locks.

“Yes, but they won’t get far,” I said. “This will work out for us.”

“Work out?” she asked, her voice raising. “Quinn, we were supposed tosneakout, notstart a manhunt!”

“They need to see to believe,” I said, pulling her to me. I inhaled her scent greedily, loving the way she felt in my arms. I would do anything for this nervous little agent and I was ready to prove it. “Don’t worry. I won’t let them hurt you.”

She pushed me back with a pout.

“I’m worried about you, not me,” she said and dashed for her room.

“Where are you going?” I called, not able to stop the smile from spreading across my lips.

“Packing, so we can get the fuck out of here!”

Despite it all, this is the most fun I’ve had in ages.
