“The longest,” I said, though my voice was muffled by her shirt.

“I know you don’t want to hurt her feelings, but maybe it’s time to break it off, Blake.” The tone she used caused my chest to twist and guilt to sit heavy in my chest. She pulled me away so she could give me that smile she was known for, but it lost all its playfulness in the moment and just felt pitying.

“I know,” I said with a sigh. “I just—I think it’s my fault. Like I shouldn’t need to perform and sleep with other people to make it work—”

“Imma stop you right there,” Sloan said, squeezing my shoulders. “You want different things, that’s it. And obviously she can’t compromise in a way that keeps you satisfied. Move on. Life is too short to be in an unhappy situationship.”

I raised a brow at her.

“Weren’t you the one that literally spent years pining after yourstep-sister—”

“Shh,” she said with a laugh. “Different scenario. Lillian was my end goal. This girl, she…”

Is definitely not.

“Fun for some time and good to get me back into the swing of things,” I said, giving her a forced smile. “I’ll talk to her. Don’t worry.”

She patted me on the shoulder and gave me a smile.

“Good girl, now let’s talk performance. Does e-stim or tattooing sound interesting to you?”

Fuck it.

“Both,” I said, crossing my arms.

Sloan’s eyes twinkled in the dim light. “I knew you still had it in you.”

Quinn

Iwas an assassin. A cold-blooded, ruthless killer… so why the fuck had I lowered myself to hiding in a closet?

I tried not to shift as Tiffany and that pierced girl got closer. Their voices were slightly more hushed now as they looked over the taller girl’s iPad.

Sloan.My mind supplied for me.

I had seen her in the files, and if my memory serves me right, she had been one of the ones to allow me into this club.

Her mistake.

If I had seen the profile that Rolf submitted on my behalf, I would have denied it right away.

There was barely any history. No life stories or quirky anecdotes about why Ideservedto be in the club. They were asking for it to get rejected.

It was even more sparse than the file on Blake, and eventhatwas suspicious.

“Ax says the members miss you at the Oakheart location,” Sloan said as she pulled the iPad away and held it against her chest. “Maybe you could go there for a bit? Get away from Bailey?” She leaned against the counter, her long legs stretching out in front of her. Even in this position, Blake was still slightly shorter than her.

It made me start to wonder exactly how she was able to protect her charges.

Blake let out a sigh. I shifted to get a better look at her through the crack in the closet.

“It’s not like Iwantto run away from her,” she said under her breath.

“Isn’t that what you’re doing?” Sloan said, though her pierced eyebrow was raised and there was a slight quirk to her lips, giving me the indication that she didn’t mean the words as harshly as they sounded.

The pout that formed on Blake’s lips caused something in my chest to unclench.

Before Blake could respond, the sound of the door opening caught both of their attention. From my spot in the closet, I couldn’t make out the intruder, but at the first sound of her voice, it became clear.
