But it was her eyes that gave everything away. She wasn't just angry, she was insulted. She didn't like Blake's performances, that much was clear, but to feel insulted by them?

She has a weak ego.

She was dead silent, not bothering to give me a response.

“That’s okay, you don't have to answer. I also had a horrible day. That's why I came here.” I shot her a smirk. “But I haven't found anything that enticing as ofyet. I wanted to work off some steam—”

“Some steam?” she asked under her breath, shaking her head.

“Heartbreak, I guess, is a better word?”

Thatgot her attention. She turned toward me, her eyebrows raising.

“Don't tell me you got dumped and are now you’re looking for a pity fuck, and you thoughtIwould be the right person?”

I let a light laugh spill from my lips. My eyes trailed from her eyes to her lips.

“Pity fuck?” I asked. “Do I look that pitiful for you?”

Her eyes ran up and down my frame.

Maybe Rolf was onto something with this job.Maybe this wouldn’t be as hard as I originally thought.

“She cheated.” Her eyes lit up at this. “Found her fucking the doorman. Couldn't even make it up if I tried. I had a feeling that she wasn't worth it. I tried really hard to make things work, but—”

“She never seems to appreciate it?” she asked, a knowing look passing her face.

I let an easy smile cross my face.God, she was too easy to read.If I played my cards right, this would be over in just a few hours.

“I’m guessing you felt the same thing before? It was fucking humiliating. This guy has seen me every day since we moved in. I don't know how long they were fucking, but knowing that he just watched me while—” I let out a noise of disgust. “I just don’t get how someone could do that to their partner, you know?”

She let out a snort and took a gulp of her drink.

“Some people just have no respect,” she said. “For the people they are seeingandfor themselves.”

The venom in her words, combined with what she was insinuating, caused me to bristle. I couldn’t help but look over at the bartender. She met my gaze with a look that told me, “You picked this battle yourself, don’t look at me for help.”

“Right,” I said, trying not to grimace.I take back what I thought before. This job was awful. When was the last time I had to make conversation like this before?“You too, I guess?”

“You’ve seen her, haven’t you?” she asked, shooting me a look. “I think I saw you in her performance room. TheillustriousBlake.”

Damn. Here I thought, after all the times I came here, that I was hiding in the darkness pretty well.

“I have,” I said with a hum.

“Of course you have,” she said. “Everyonehas. Everyone is just so in love with her and she justeatsit up, forgetting about everyone else she leaves behind.”

Everyone meaning you,I wanted to spit out.

“So while she’s up there getting fucked, you’re out here getting drunk?” I asked. “Doesn’t seem like a fair trade.”

“It’s not!” she said a bit too loudly.

I put my drink down, giving a strained smile to the bartender before letting my hand rest on her elbow.

“Walk with me,” I said in a low voice. “So we can continue without too manypryingeyes.”

She looked around as if she just now realized where she was.
