It wasn’t, and she took full advantage of that.

She would do anything to get the upper hand, both back then and sure as hell now. I wouldn’t put it past her to even try to ruin this job.

I turned to see if the small professor she had her eyes on was with her, but her side was empty. It gave me some relief that there wouldn’t be too much of an audience. Avery may have been one of the few people who knew what I did for work, and I wanted to keep it that way.

I dropped my voice low enough for Blake not to hear. “Interfere, and I’ll kill you.”

Avery threw her head back and let out a booming laugh. I looked around the all but empty hallway to check if she drew any attention to us, but luckily the only people there with us were too far away to take notice.

“Oh, you’re too funny,” she said, and when she finally got ahold of herself, she narrowed her eyes at me. “As if you could.”

Red flashed across my vision. My hands itched to circle around her throat.

“Just kidding,” she said, shaking her head. “I have one more thing for you to do. Then we will call all debts paid off.”

Now? She was calling in her favor right fucking now?

I cast a glance toward my target. All the time I spent preparing for this was about to be ruined by this slimy fox. She knew for a fact that I wouldalwaysrepay my debts, so bringing it up right here and now all but guaranteed that my night would be wasted.

“Blake, Avery?”

Goddamn it. How hard was it to be alone with my target?

We all turned down the hall to catch three people walking down the hallway. Sloan, cyber security for the club, who has a track record of money laundering and fraud. Her partner and stepsister, Lillian, was at her side, and next to her was Avery’s partner, Willow.

Sloan had straight silver hair, light skin, and piercings all over her face. Her stepsister, Lillian, was the exact opposite, with curly hair, taupe skin, and no visible piercings besides the ones in her ears. Sloan’s mom had married Lillian’s father before his death.

Sloan and Blake were close. Before she got together with her partner, Sloan and Blake often performed together on stage. Or at least that’s what the file said. What they didn’t tell me was how the pierced girl would look at me.

Sloan’s gray eyes narrowed when she saw Avery’s arm around my shoulder.

“I didn’t know you knew Reilly, Avery.” At leastsomeonecould use the fake name. She led the group to us, her eyes assessing Avery and me. There was a smile on her face, but just like most humans, her eyes gave away everything. She suspected something she shouldn’t have. “You should have said something.”

I gritted my teeth. This is karma coming to bite me in the ass.

“We go way back,” she said. “It was like high school or something?”

“Something like that,” I muttered. I may have played a highschooler during the job we met on, but never went to high school and she fucking knew it.

Sloan looked toward Avery, and her face told me she wanted to say something, but didn’t.

“Well, Blake,” Avery said with a sugary-sweet tone. “I hope you don’t mind if I take this one for a moment. I promise I’ll have her back within the hour.”

Blake gave her a forced smile before I was pulled away by Avery.

“I swear I will slit your throat as soon—”

“Oh, be quiet,” Avery moaned as she pulled me into one of the empty performance areas. The room was dim with just enough light for me to read her expression. “Think of this as something for the both of us.”

I didn’t want to cave so easily, but if Avery had something for me, it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Intrigued, I raised a brow at her.

“Avery Maddox doing something for someone other than herself?”

“Wanna talk about the woman you murdered instead?” she asked, grabbing my attention immediately.

“You’ll have to be more specific,” I spit out through clenched teeth.

Avery let out a chuckle while shaking her head. “Man, I really think we could be friends one day.”
