She stood up straight and sent me a smile. Her hand reached out and was about to land on my shoulder, but I pushed it off.

“After this,” I warned in a low tone. “Leave Blake and I alone.”

She pulled her hand back, though the smirk never left her face.

“Your wish is my command,” she all but sang as she passed me. “But if I were you, I’d hurry, or else she might find someone else to warm her bed tonight.”

With a clenched jaw, I walked out of the room with her, only to see that the hallway where my target once was, was now empty.

“Aw, too bad,” Avery said with mock pity.

Grumbling under my breath, I shoved the gem into my pocket and stalked out of the club.

Just this one thing, and I will come back for you, Blake.

Blake

“When have Ieverasked you for anything like this?” I winced at the desperation in my tone, but Sloan just gave me a pitiful grin.

“You know the rules, Blake,” she said and leaned back in her office chair. The only thing separating us was her mountain of monitors, and in the moment, I had the urge to push them all down. “What happened to Bailey, by the way? You know she wouldn’t be happy about this. Did you finally tell her you weren’t interested or something?”

I swallowed thickly and averted my gaze. No, but I wish I had.It would have been better than having that fight be the last thing we said to each other before she ghosted me. The issue was that it didn’t even hurt.

I expected to be upset about the whole thing. Maybe even cry a little.

I was worried for a few days but finally snapped out of it earlier that afternoon before coming to the club. If she was going to ghost me, then so be it.

“Uh… I think she ghosted me,” I said. “I tried calling her, but she didn’t pick up. So I thought…”

“The best way to get over someone is to get under another?” she asked with a laugh. “It’s for the best. She was cramping your style, you know? I remember the nights when you would perform forcrowdsof people, Blake, and now you barely even get up on stage anymore!”

I bit my tongue to stop my words from spilling out.

I had been so interested in Bailey at the time that I was willing to give up performing to make her happy, but then she wanted more. She wanted to approve of all my sexual partners. She wanted to know exactly when I would come to the club. She wanted to see my apartment for god’s sake.

Something I hadn’t done with anyone before.Couldn’tdo with anyone, or else I’d have to tell my boss about myrelationship.

But this girl…Quinn. Her sharp blue eyes flashed across my mind, causing goosebumps to break out across my skin.

“And this girl…” I trailed, looking up at Sloan.

“Don’t you give me those puppy-dog eyes,” Sloan warned, holding up her hand to stop me.

“Come on,” I whined. “It’s been so hard to get her alone. She always leaves after performances, and now that I am officially untied, I just thought—”

“Blake.”

“I know, but listen. I just want her number! That’s all, and I swear—”

“And what if someone wanted your number?” she asked. “Would you want me to fold?”

Her words caused my mouth to slam shut. We both knew that I wouldn’t, and she was one of the only reasons I was able to keep my membership here activeandstay at my job.

I had met Sloan when I came to the main club and used to perform with her often. It led us to become quite close.

Sloan was a likable person, but I found myself drawn to her even more than on a surface level. There was something behind the teasing facade she kept on, like her own personal mask. She was hiding something. A long time ago, I got a glimpse of what she was hiding, and it only made me trust her even more than I already did.

I wished one day that I could share everything with her, but I cared for her too much to put her in that type of danger. So for now, I would keep her in the dark.
