In reality, preserving the eyes has proven to be a difficult yet rewarding hobby. I had lost quite a few in the beginning, but over the last few years I had perfected my craft, and now my office had an entire shelf filled with them.

But if Blake saw those… I actually had no idea how she would react, and a part of me wanted to keep it hidden as long as possible. Even if she had an inkling about what I did, it would be nothing compared to what seeing it would do to her.

I wasn’t ashamed of what I did. Even if I wished I didn’t have to do it to her.

But some part of me felt scared to show her. Like I knew, she would run screaming and crying in the other direction.

“Damn it, fine,” he hissed. “I’ll send you the coordinates, but thiswillbe coming out of your pay.”

He hung up on me, and I let out a sigh and ran my hand through my hair.It was all so fucked. Definitely Karma biting me in the ass.

“Did you get done what you needed to?” Blake’s voice caused me to jump.

I twirled around, sending her a glare.

Yet again, I hadn’t heard her come into the room, but there she was, leaning against the doorframe with an almost blank expression. Her eyes were the ones that gave it away. They glimmered with curiosity.

“Yes.” I nodded. “How are you so quiet all the time?”

“When it’s life or death, people learn how to conceal their footsteps,” she said.

“Was it because of him? Did he hurt you?” I asked, remembering the way his eyes narrowed on Blake. If there weren’t multiple teams of government agents watching, I would have killed him.

I didn’t like him one bit, and there was only one conclusion I came to based on what their body language told me.

I just neededherto say it.

“I haven’t seen him in years,” she said with a shrug. “Were you surprised?”

Yes.Because it wasn’t in your file. But instead, I asked, “Did you run away from him because he was hurting you?”

She squared her shoulders and held her chin high like she needed to compensate for what she was about to say.

“And if I say yes?” she asked.

“Then I put a bullet in his head,” I growled, unable to help myself. My vision was already turning red. I wanted to do more than just put a bullet in his head. I wanted to slam his face into the concrete. I wanted to puncture his internal organs, leaving him to die a slow and painful death. I wanted to tie him upside down with a small puncture wound in his neck, letting him bleed out while all the blood rushed to his head, and—

This whole situation is bullshit.

How had she changed me so much? How had I gotten soweakthat just the sight of him caused me to want to kill him for my own vengeance? Ineverkilled anyone outside of a job. Yet for Blake, I was willing to kill just about anyone who threatened to put their hands on her.

She deflated slightly, a small smile spreading across her face.

“You wouldn’t be able to,” she said. “Not while he’s expecting it anyway. He’s dangerous, Quinn. Even now, I’m debating whether I should keep this identity or flee.”

“What’s stopping you?” I asked, knowing that if she so much as attempted to flee, I would be right there behind her.

Her face heated at this, and her eyes fell to the floor.

“The need to be remembered,” she said. “This life I built here… it’s nothing to brag about, but it’ssomething.I have people who mean a lot to me here. A life I never thought possible before.”

I swallowed thickly. It was going to be destroyed. Everything she had built here. Whether it was because of me or him. Either way, the life she lived here would cease to exist.

Why did the knowledge of that feel like a punch to the gut?

“What did he do to you?” I asked, needing to think of anything other than her inevitable death.

“Everything, anything,” she said. “I was young, right out of high school, and he took advantage of that. I only left because I knew whatever he had done, his friends would do worse.”
