“Me, too. But the sleepover′’s this weekend. We’ll get to spend more time together. We won’t need to sneak around so much. The boys will be busy.”

“I can’t wait. The only downside is I can’t spend the entire night in bed with you.”

“Don’t worry; we’ll make time for each other. We have all the time in the world to be together.”

“Mmm,” he moans against my lips, giving me another searing kiss. With perfect timing, my son pulls up in front of us.

“What are you doing?” He scrunches his face up. “You look like Starfire and Robin when we put them in the cage together.”

Resting our foreheads together, embarrassed even though I agreed to the PDA, Landon smirks, and I say, “See what you’ve done? I’m going to have to explain this.”

“I got it covered.” He faces Jacob’s inquisitive eyes. “I’m making your mom very happy. Showing her, like an adult, how much I care about her. She can’t get enough of me.” He looks down at me smugly.

“Oh, you!” I push out of his arms, smacking him playfully.

He fake grunts. “Come on, Jacob. Let me show you another trick before your mother turns my arm black and blue.” They laugh, Jacob riding off, Landon loping behind him. When did my life become this...joyous? With hope, it’ll last forever.

The next day, after dinner with Shay and my mother, I’m tucking Jacob into bed while he tells me about his day at school. I zone out for a second, thinking about how much I missed having Landon with us tonight. But I do understand he has to work and spend time with Jackson, trying to make this a seamless transition for his son.

It doesn’t make me feel any less insecure when he’s having dinner with his family, including the woman who is still very much his wife. It’s been a few weeks, and he hasn’t mentioned filing for divorce again. A few times when he’s been here, he’s had to leave early because Bree has called, saying Jackson wanted to see him. It’s good he’s attentive and caring for his son and his feelings, but still, he’s not just going home to him.

He’s going home to what seems like his other family. His real one. Not the one that very well could be temporary, no matter how much he reassures me that he’s with me, and he doesn’t want to be anywhere else. Saying that, though, and seeing it when he’s split between two different homes, it’s harder to believe.

I’m trying not to let the insecurities and doubts of the past sneak in to ruin this. I’m worthy of a second chance. I’m strong enough to see this through as the secure woman I professed to be to Shay. Now, all I need to do is keep reminding myself of this every day.

“Jackson didn’t want to play with me today.”

“What? Why not?” My brows pull together as my thoughts scatter, and I focus on Jacob.

“I don’t know.” He shrugs. “I was telling him about all the fun we were having with Landon, and that he taught me to do a wheelie, and I was going to the father-son game with them. He said he didn’t want to play ball anymore. He went to play with Andre and the other kids.”

I place my hand on his. “Why didn’t you go, too?”

“He didn’t ask. I played tag with Aisha and her friends. When we went back inside, he didn’t want to talk much.”

“You know, sometimes it’s good to play with your other friends, too. Doesn’t mean anything that for one day you didn’t spend all your time with Jackson. Tomorrow’ll be different. Okay?”

He looks at me a minute. “Okay. Good night, mom.”

“Good night.” I kiss him, fixing his sheet around him.

I’m sure this is a case of spending too much time together. Even little kids get burnt out of playing with each other too much. I’m sure it’ll be fine...they’ll be best of friends again tomorrow. No need for me to mention it to Landon.

I curl up under my covers after checking all the locks, windows, and setting the alarm. I turn over when my phone buzzes with a heart emoji, putting a smile on my face.

Lacey: What are you doing?

Landon: Thinking about you on the job.

Lacey: That’s no good. Shouldn’t all your focus be on serving your customers? What would your partner say to this bad behavior?

Landon: If he thought it would get me some he would usher me out the door to the woman I??.

Boy, he’s flirting dangerously close to saying those words I’m not sure I’m ready to say or hear. Still, doesn’t change the glow I feel from the thought of hearing those precious word from his lips.

Lacey: ??Go back to work before you have a mob of outraged neglected customers on your hands. ??good night, Landon.

Landon: Good night, Lacey baby. ????
