“I should’ve listened to you.” I wipe at my face, wishing the tears would stop coming. “I was an idiot to think Parker could ever like me. He only talked to me in the first place out of curiosity.”

“Maybe he did talk to you out of curiosity, but Parker does like you, Henley.” Will angles his body toward me. “He more than likes you. He’s in love with you.”

I shake my head, denying it. “He said he did. But I don’t believe him.”

“He’s only pushing you away because he loves you. He’s doing it for you. He’s protecting you. Because one day, you will meet your mate. And he doesn’t want you to have any regrets.”

I just keep shaking my head back and forth. “No.”

“When you ran out in front of that truck, Parker lost it,” Will says.

My head jerks up to look at him. “What?”

“He full on freaked out. I’ve never seen him that scared before. He was crying and screaming. And when you caught on fire, I had to hold him back to keep him from going to you. He would’ve jumped on top of you to put out the flames, but they were so hot. It would’ve killed him. Wolf shifters aren’t immune to fire.” Will rubs one hand over his arm, like he’s trying to rub away the bad memory.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to run out in front of that truck. I’m not suicidal. I just wanted to get away from you guys. Parker had just dumped me. I didn’t want to see him. And I figured you would be happy about it, so I didn’t want to see you either.”

Will frowns. “I am sorry. I was wrong.”

“Wrong?” I raise an eyebrow.

He lets out a long breath. “About everything. About you. About Parker. I don’t know what fate has in store for the two of you, but from what I can see, you two belong together.”

My breath gets caught in my throat.

“You have to tell him everything,” Will says. “Show him your wings. He’s not going to abandon you.”

“He already has abandoned me.” I lower my head, letting my hair curtain my face.

“I heard what you told him,” Will says.

I glance up. “I thought you had already left.”

“I wanted to know what would happen.” He plays with the corner of my blanket. “You’re the one who left. You’re the one who told him you can’t be friends with him.”

“Because Ican’t. It hurts too bad.” My chest aches, so I rub at it, wishing the pain would go away. “I love him, Will.”

“I know.” Will puts his hand on my arm. “And he loves you. That isn’t something you should pass up.”

“But I thought you said we should wait for our mates. Your parents—”

He cuts me off. “I let you believe that my parents weren’t mates, but they were. They were killed because they had children. The elemental king had recently changed the law, saying mates were the exception. But not all of the elementals were on board with the change. And my sister…” he closes his eyes, clenching his jaw, “she chose to leave. She didn’t want to be with the wolves. She didn’t want to be withme.”

I grab ahold of his hand. “I don’t know why she left you, but she was an idiot to do so. She missed out on an incredible brother.”

Will’s brown eyes meet mine again. “Why are you being nice to me? I’ve been horrible to you. I’ve lied to you and done everything that I could to make you feel like you weren’t accepted.”

I shrug one shoulder. “I met you first.”

He raises an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”

“The first day I moved here, I met you first. Before Parker or any other wolf shifter. It was in our first period class,” I say.

He nods. “You were staring at me.”

I grin. “Yeah. Because I couldn’t hear your thoughts. You were giving me this look like you were angry to even breathe the same air as I was. But I couldn’t hear you. And it was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had. I decided right then that it didn’t matter if you liked me or not. I liked you. Being around you is nice because I never know what you’re thinking.”

He snorts. “I always tell you what I’m thinking.”
