“Regardless, I hear it from your lips and not your head. It’s so peaceful being around you—being aroundallof you. I’ve never felt so normal before, which is ironic considering I’m surrounded by supernatural creatures.”

Will studies me carefully. “You’re weird, you know that? Who decides to just like somebody who is glaring at them?”

I shrug one shoulder, not denying his words. He’s right. Iamweird.

“What were you thinking about me that day?” I ask him.

“At first, I was wonderingwhatyou were. You smelled different than anything I’d ever smelled before. But then you kept looking at me.” His eyes narrow as he looks at me. “If you tell anybody this, I will deny it. But I thought you were really pretty.”

“Really?” I can’t help but smile.

He rolls his eyes. “Don’t let it go to your head.”

I bite my bottom lip to try and hide the smile.

“I thought maybe you were part succubus or something,” he says.

I raise an eyebrow. “Succubi are really beautiful, right? I don’t know a lot about them, just what I’ve seen in movies.”

“There are succubi, which are female, and incubi, which are male. They’re very… attractive to the opposite sex. But they have the opposite effect on the same sex—so females hate succubi, and males hate incubi. It’s almost like you can’t help the feeling.” He shrugs. “But that’s not important. You’re not a succubus.”

“Parker thinks maybe I’m a hybrid. So maybe I am part succubus.” I laugh, realizing how absurd that sounds. “Okay, I’m probably not part succubus. I’m not pretty enough.”

Will shakes his head. “You’re not a hybrid and definitely not a succubus. I’ve seen you trip over your own feet enough times to know you’re not smooth enough to be one.”

“Gee, thanks.” I stick my tongue out at him.

He laughs. “Sorry. I didn’t mean that to come out as an insult, but it’s true. And I’m glad you’re not a succubus. If you were, we probably wouldn’t be friends. And I like being your friend.”

“Even though you’re going to send me away the moment you figure out what I am?” I look down, not wanting to make eye contact with him.

“I didn’t mean that. I’m sorry I was a jerk.” He touches my arm to get me to look up. “You’re not going anywhere. Parker would never allow that and neither would Blaine.”

“What about you?” I ask. “Do you want to send me away?”

He pauses. “Eh, maybe sometimes. But not after today. After I saw how Parker reacted—you can’t go. If you did, it would crush him.”

My heart clenches at his words. “I’m scared to show him my wings. I don’t want him to send me away and part of me thinks he will. I’m a freak.”

“No, you’re not. Your magnificent,” Will proclaims. “Parker agrees. Seeing your wings won’t change that.”

My heart races as I realize I’m going to do exactly what he said. I’m going to be brave and I’m going to tell Parker the entire truth about me.

“I’m scared,” I admit.

“Sometimes, you have to take a chance and jump.”

My eyes widen. “Like I did when I flew for the first time.”

He smiles. “Exactly like that. Though, maybe you shouldn’t risk your life anymore. We don’t know how many times you can come back to life before you don’t anymore.”

“Maybe I have nine lives, like a cat.”

Will shakes his head. “No. Even cat shifters don’t have nine lives.”

“There are cat shifters?” I ask, imagining a small house cat.

“Big cats,” he clarifies. “Tigers. Panthers. Lions.”
