“Will, can you keep an eye on Henley during class? If she gets a nose bleed or gets dizzy, let me know,” Parker orders.

Will’s scowl only deepens. “Why do you care what happens to her?”

“Until we figure out…” Parker’s voice trails off as he glances at me, then back at Will. “She’s basically pack right now. And we will look out for her, okay?”

Will’s jaw ticks as he looks from Parker to me. “She’s kind of scrawny to be pack.” He glances back at Parker. “Do you hold hands with all female pack members now? I wonder what your father would have to say about that.”

Parker narrows his eyes. “Are you threatening me?”

Will shrugs. “If I have to, then yes. You’re being stupid right now.”

Parker, who is still holding my hand, takes a menacing step toward Will. “I will tell my dad when I get home from school today, so your threat means nothing to me. You know me. I don’t do anything without a reason.”

“So she’s your soulmate then?” Will raises an eyebrow, daring Parker to argue.

His shoulders slump forward slightly, but he doesn’t back down. “No. But I don’t have to explain myself to you. I gave you an order. Look. Out. For. Henley.”

Will clenches his jaw, but nods. “Okay.”

Parker turns to look at me, his expression softening. “I have to get to class. But I will walk you to your next class, okay?”

I nod, keeping my mouth shut.

He hands me my backpack and slowly lets go of the hold on my hand. When he lets go, I’m hit with a rush of voices and I sway a bit on my feet. He puts his hand on my arm to steady me. It’s then that I look around and see that there is a crowd forming around us.

Great—now everybody is going to think two of the nefarious three are fighting over me. This isn’t going to end well for me.

“Are you okay?” Parker asks.

“Yes. I just didn’t realize…” I glance around us.

He nods. “Sorry.”

Will huffs. “Go on, Parker. I’ve got her.”

“You sure?” Parker asks.

“Yes.” Will grabs ahold of my arm, so Parker lets go. I’m hit my thoughts once more, but I’m prepared for them this time. I watch as Parker walks in the opposite direction. Will tugs on my arm, pulling me into the classroom with him.

We take our seats in the back of the room. I’m still dazed from whatever just happened, I’m not quite sure.

Will’s eyes are narrowed as he looks at me.

I lick my lips, which suddenly feel dry. “It’s not what you think. Parker is just helping me with something.”

His body goes rigid. “You expect me to believe that?”

“It’s the truth,” I say, wishing I could somehow get him to believe me.

His lips turn down. “You’re not lying.”

“I’m not,” I confirm.

Before he or I can say anything else, the teacher begins the class. I notice people glancing back at me a lot. And there are a lot of loud voices, but it’s manageable today.

Will slides a piece of paper onto my desk. The teacher hasn’t noticed—she’s too busy thinking about some movie she watched the night before.

Are you okay?
