I nod. “But I don’t know what makes us so different. You said you can’t read minds. Do you have another superpower or something?”

He grins. “Something like that.”

After that, he tugs me toward the cafeteria, leaving me wondering what he means by that. Parker is so mysterious. And somehow, my dad knows. He’s the one I should be asking, but he’s always working so it might be a while before I can ask.

If any of Parker’s friends think it’s weird that we’re holding hands, they don’t act like it. They pretty much ignore it. Blaine is the only one to react.

Will is nowhere to be seen, which makes me feel bad. He’s probably avoiding the cafeteria because of me. No matter what Parker says, I know Will hates me.

“Hey, Vixen,” Blaine greets me, his lips turning up in the corners.

I nod at him. “Hey, Blaine.”

I guess the obnoxious nickname is staying for now. No matter how much I tell him to knock it off, he never seems to get the hint.

“When are you coming over again for dinner?” Blaine raises an eyebrow. “I want to make sure I get invited too.”

Parker makes a low noise that almost sounds like a growl. I glance over at him. Instead of seeing his normal blue eyes, I see a dark, golden color.

I blink—they’re still gold.

Maybe I really am going insane.

Blaine knocks his bottle of water over. I jump up from the table, trying not to get soaked.

“Sorry.” Blaine puts some napkins down, trying to soak it up.

I glance at Parker again, to see what color his eyes are—they’re blue again.

Did Blaine do that on purpose? And why were Parker’s eyes that color? Does it have something to do with his ‘superpower?’ Do all of his friends have a superpower? I have so many questions, but I know right now isn’t the time. I should ask my dad first and give him the chance to tell me. If he won’t… then I’ll go to Parker and demand to know.

Parker nudges me with his elbow. “Are you okay?”

I nod. “I’m fine.”

Blaine clears his throat. “So, uh, does that mean I’m not invited for dinner?”

His question makes me bust out laughing. I’m not surewhy—it’s not even funny. But when I start laughing, Blaine does too, followed by Parker. Just like that, the tension between the two vanishes.

You don’t belong here.

Parker is quiet as we head home from school, which is just fine with me. I could use a break from all the noise. The quiet is nice. When we get to my house, Parker walks me to the door and makes sure that I get in okay.

“Are you going to be okay tonight by yourself?” He stuffs his hands into the front pocket of his jeans as he asks.

“Yeah.” I tuck a piece of hair behind my ear. “My dad is always working, so I’m used to being alone. Maybe I’ll start knitting your socks tonight.”

He grins. “It’s still weird that you knit socks.”

I shrug. “No weirder than reading minds.”

“True.” His smile grows. “I guess I’ll see you later, Henley.”

“Tomorrow,” I say, reminding him that it’s a school day.

He furrows his brows. “Right.” He turns to walk away, but stops abruptly, turning to face me. “Tonight is the full moon. So, uh, you should stay inside.”
