I laugh at the absurdity.

Maybealiens exist. But if they did, why would they come to Earth, of all places? No, that’s not it. It has to be something else.

I think about the fantasy book I was listening to earlier. Maybe I’m a fae. In books I’ve read, fae sometimes have the ability to read mortal’s minds. But the thought of not being human—no. I refuse to go there. There has to be another explanation.

When I get to Parker’s house, I consider changing my mind.

There are just as many cars parked in front of the house as there were last time. I spot Parker’s red Jeep sitting there. For some reason, I expected him to be gone to school even though he said he wasn’t going.

Two of Parker’s siblings are playing outside. They yell my name and wave at me, so I wave back, but I keep marching toward the front door. Just as I’m about to knock, the door swings open and Parker is standing there.

“Henley.” He furrows his brows, looking behind me. “How did you get here?”

“I walked.”

“From your house?”

“You realize it’s only half a mile, right?” I look up at him, wondering why he’s surprised. Before I can lose my nerve, I get right to the point of my visit. “We need to talk.”

Parker shifts his weight. “I think you should go home, Henley. You need to talk to your dad, not me.”

I huff. “My dad’s asleep. And when he wakes up, he’ll likely be in a hurry to get back to work. I don’t see my dad enough to talk to him. Maybe I get one day every few weeks if I’m lucky.”

“So wait until then.” He crosses his arms over his chest. “I know you want answers. I want to give them to you. But I promised your dad that I would let him talk to you. I respect your dad, Henley. And I want him to like me.”

He wants my dad to like him.

That one sentence completely halts my argument.

“Fine.” I let out a breath. “I just hate waiting.”

He chuckles. “Trust me, I know. You’re the girl who is used to knowing what everybody is thinking. It must be hard to not know for once in your life.”

I shrug. “It’s kind of a nice change.”

Parker walks forward. “I need to go get Blaine. I can drive you home first, but I have to go.”

I shake my head. “I’m good. I’ll just walk home.”

He looks like he wants to object. “I’m sorry. I really do have to go. Blaine needs me.”

“Go.” I wave him on. “I’m fine.”

“You can hang out here until I’m done.” His blue eyes pin me in place. “Don’t leave. Please.”

I nod, letting him know I will stay.

Parker rushes toward his Jeep. He looks at me one last time before getting in.

Whatever is going on with Blaine, I know it’s important. If it wasn’t, there is no way Parker would be leaving right now.

He backs out of the driveway and I stand on his front porch, wondering what I should do. It feels strange to just go inside and hang out with Parker’s family while he’s not here.

Just as I’m about to head inside, a car pulls into the driveway. I turn around to see who it is and wish I hadn’t when I see an angry figure jumping out of the sports car.

“How are you everywhere I go?” Will’s dark eyes home in on me as he takes a menacing step in my direction.

I stand up straighter, trying to show him that he doesn’t scare me. “I was here first. You’re the one stalking me.”
