He scoffs. “Don’t expect me to be nice to you—that’s Blaine, not me. And don’t expect me to call you Vixen either. You’re the opposite of appealing.”

“Wow. Why don’t you tell me how you really feel?” I cross my arms over my chest.

The front door opens behind me. I turn around and see Mrs. Thorne poke her head out.

“Henley.” She smiles widely as she sees me. “Will. You both just missed Parker. I’ll let him know that you stopped by. You’re both welcome to wait if you’d like. I don’t imagine he’ll be gone long.”

“That’s okay, Mrs. T.Henleyand I were just leaving.” Will smiles widely, turning on the charm.

“Oh, you’re giving Henley a ride back home?” Mrs. Thorne looks at Will with one eyebrow raised.

Maybe she did hear us arguing.

“Of course.” Will clenches his teeth, but still grins widely.

I chew on my bottom lip to stop my smile. From the murderous glare that Will gives me, I can tell he’s noticed.

Will walks around to the passenger side door of his car and opens it up.

I wave goodbye to Mrs. Thorne before making my way toward Will’s car. His brown eyes are narrowed at me as I climb into the passenger seat.

This is not going to be a pleasant ride home.

He slams the door hard once I’m in. His shoulders are squared as he walks around the car and gets in the driver’s side. Once he shuts the door, he looks at me. He opens his mouth, then abruptly closes it. He starts the engine and backs out of the driveway, not giving me a second glance.

Yikes—the silent treatment. I’d almost prefer him to yell at me.

Once again, I find myself wishing that I could read somebody’s mind. If I could, maybe I could reason with Will.

He pulls onto the road, going the opposite way of my house.

“Dude, I live that way.” I point behind us.

“I don’t care.”

I cross my arms over my chest. “What? Are you going to take me and drop me off in the middle of nowhere? Make me walk home to teach me a lesson? Trust me, no matter what you do to me, I’ve been through worse.”

Will’s body relaxes at my words. “I’m not going to do that. We just need to talk and I want to do it without prying ears around. You deserve to know the truth.”

“Oh.” That wasn’t at all what I expected to hear come out of his mouth.

“I just wanted to say, about your seizures, that sucks. Parker told me that you can read human minds and that you don’t know how to control it. I truly wish that we could help you find out where you belong, but you’re a mystery, even to us,” Will says.

My eyes widen. “What do you mean? And why are you calling othershuman? Are you not a human?”

“No,” he answers bluntly.

I start to say something, but no words will come out of my mouth. I just stare at Will in stunned silence.

“You’re not human either.” He slows the car down and eventually pulls into a driveway. One that isn’t so far from Parker’s. If I have to walk home from here, it won’t be so bad.

Will gets out of the car.

I sit there for a moment, wondering if I should follow him. Before I can question it too long, my door opens, making me jump.

Will stands there. “Come on, Henley. We’re going for a walk.”

I move to get out. “You’re really bossy.”
