I should probably run—there’s awolf. But I know that this wolf won’t attack me. I know it because this wolf is Will.

I reach a hand toward him. He growls at me, but I simply roll my eyes and touch him anyway. His coat is soft. I run my hand over his head and down his spine. I hope Will isn’t offended that I’m petting him. But when am I ever going to get the chance to pet a wolf?

I pull my hand back, gasping. “Am I a werewolf too?”

The air vibrates again. In an instant, Will is standing there.

I jump, putting a hand to my racing heart. “Geez, a little warning would be nice.”

“First off, I’m not a werewolf. I’m a wolf shifter. So are Parker and Blaine. This is pack land. Everybody is wolf shifters—except you.” His eyes harden as he looks at me.

“What am I?” I ask.

He shrugs. “We don’t know. We’ve never met anything like you before.”

I put a hand to the base of my throat. “So I’m not human?”

He shakes his head.

“Am I a fae?”

He snorts. “No. You’re too tall to be a fae.”

I gasp. “Fae are real?”

“Of course.” He rolls his eyes, like I’m stupid.

“What else is real?”

“Shifters, obviously, but not all shifters are wolves. There are tigers, panthers, bears, lions, ravens, dragons—”

I cut him off. “Dragons?”

He glares at me. “There are also elementals, fae, dark fae, vampires—”

“Vampires.” I swallow hard. “Like Dracula?”

“You’re absolutely ridiculous.” He rolls his eyes at me. “Vampires aren’t murderers. They don’t even drink from people directly. They used to, hundreds of years ago, but now blood is donated to them.”

Huh.

“The point is,” Will says, looking directly into my eyes, “you’re not like us. You don’t belong here. You’re not a wolf shifter.”

Different.

I’m always different.

“You shouldn’t be hanging out with my future alpha. You’re nothing but a distraction. He needs to stay focused on the pack.” Will takes a menacing step forward. “You should leave this town.”

I shake my head back and forth, trying to form words, but nothing comes out.

Part of me hoped Parker was like me. I wanted to find somebody different like I am. But I’m not even the right kind of different for them. I’ll never fit in here.

Now, I understand. They’re a pack. And I’m just a girl who can read minds. A girl who is not human, but also not the right species.

Not wanting to talk with Will anymore, I turn around and start down the path that Will led me down. I hear Will run up behind me, telling me he’ll give me a ride home, but I ignore him and keep walking.

I know where I stand now. I’m alone. I always have been.
