I shrug, not denying it. “At least he told me the truth.”

“Youdobelong here, Henley. Just because you’re not a wolf shifter doesn’t mean you’re not welcome in our pack.”

My heart warms, but then I remember what Will said. “But Will—”

Parker cuts me off. “Will isn’t alpha. My dad is. And someday, I will be. Will doesn’t get to make rules for the pack.

I put a hand at the base of my throat.

Parker’s words are final, leaving no room for argument.

“So why go to school with humans?” I ask, changing the subject. “Isn’t there a school for supernaturals?”

“There is, but it’s an exclusive school.” His shoulders tighten.

“But you’re alpha. Certainly you were invited,” I argue.

He nods. “I didn’t want to leave my pack for four years while I went to finish high school on an island.”

My eyes widen. “An island?”

Parker sighs as he pulls his Jeep into a parking spot at school. “It’s off the coast of Florida.”

“Is it just for wolf shifters?” I take a sip of my coffee.

He shakes his head. “Other supernaturals go there too. It’s mostly shifters, but they’ve recently invited other kinds of supernaturals to attend.”

“I probably wouldn’t be welcome.” I frown. “Then again, I’m not welcome anywhere.”

“You’re welcome here. With me and with my pack.” Parker grabs ahold of my hand.

“But I’m different.”

“You’re perfect. Don’t let Will make you feel bad about yourself. He has unrealistic expectations for how people should act. What he says doesn’t matter to me. It shouldn’t matter to you either.”

My heart swells at his words.

Nobody has ever accepted me before.

Parker gets out of the vehicle. I open my door as he rushes around to my side.

“You should wait for me to open the door,” he says.

“Sorry,” I say, as I get out. “People don’t normally open the door for me.”

“I don’t think I’d like New York,” Parker says.

I shrug. “I didn’t like it much either.”

Parker shuts the door but doesn’t move to head inside. “You believe me, right?”

“About which part?” I ask.

“All of it—you’re not so different than me. You don’t need to be a wolf shifter to be in my pack. You’re a supernatural. You’re one of us.” His blue eyes never leave mine. He studies me carefully, like he’s trying to decide if I believe him or not.

It’s hard for me to believe him. Everybody who has known what I can do has been scared of me. It’s why I had a new nanny every month. It’s why, eventually, Dad just took me to the hospital with him. I spent quite a few years basically living out of his office at the hospital while he worked until I was old enough to stay home by myself.

But with the way Parker is looking at me, his blue eyes not even blinking as he watches me, I can almost believe him. It will take me a while to trust it, but I believe him.
