Not knowing what to do, I throw my arms around him, squeezing him against me. He stiffens, like he’s surprised by the move, but eventually puts his arms around me and hugs me back.

“Thank you,” I tell him, as I pull away. Tears press against the back of my eyes, but I blink them away. “I’ve never had a friend before.”

“You do now.” Parker backs away, slinging my backpack over his shoulder. “You ready?”

I nod, walking forward.

Parker paces beside me. “By the way, keep the whole supernatural thing between us. The number one Supernatural Law is that we keep the existence of our kind a secret from humans. If you tell a human, you’ll go to supernatural prison.”

“I won’t tell anybody,” I promise.

Who would I tell anyway?

Parker pauses right before we get to the door. I wonder what he’s doing when he pulls his phone out of his back pocket.

“Hello,” he answers, putting his phone to his ear. He groans at whatever response there is. “Seriously, Dad?” Pause. “Fine. I’m on my way.”

He hangs up, stuffing his phone back in his pocket. His blue eyes meet mine.

“I have to go. My dad needs help with something.” Parker hands my backpack to me. “Will you be okay here without me? I’d take you with me, but it’s alpha stuff.”

“I’m fine.” I reach out to grab my backpack.

“Will and Blaine will look out for you. I will make sure of it,” Parker says.

I nod, letting him know that I’m okay.

Blaine might look out for me, but Will… he’d likely rather see me suffer. Still, even he can’t ignore a command from his alpha.

Parker squeezes my hand one last time before he turns to leave the school. I put my backpack over my shoulder before taking a deep breath and turning toward the school.

I can handle this. Parker can’talwaysbe with me everywhere I go. I need to learn how to block the voices on my own.

It’ll be fine.

I pull the door open and walk inside. Right away, I am hit with loud voices. Apparently some of the kids saw Parker and me hugging in the parking lot and word has already gotten around the school. The kids are speculating that we’re dating. They’d be extremely disappointed if they knew the truth.

By the time I make it to my first period class, my head is pounding.

“Are you okay?” Will looks at me with his eyebrows furrowed.

“Fine,” I mumble. My words sound slurred, even to me.

“Your face is pale and your nose is bleeding.”

Without a word, I reach into my backpack and put a tissue up to my nose. “Parker had to leave.”

Will cocks his head to the side. “You really weren’t just saying he blocked out the voices because you want to be close to him?”

I should be mad at him, but I’m too sick to even glare. “Why would I lie about that?”

He shrugs. Tentatively, Will reaches out his hand and touches my arm. “Does that help?”

I shake my head. “Not at all.”

He frowns. “I’m sorry.”

I shrug. “It’s okay. Just… if I end up having a seizure, don’t take me to the nurse. Maybe take me home. I’ll sleep it off.”
