I look at Parker. His jaw is hanging open. I glance back at the doctor.

“I’ve had my blood drawn before,” I tell him. “There has never been a problem.”

Steve looks completely perplexed. “I have no idea. Maybe it’s an age thing. Wolf shifters don’t shift from birth. It comes with age, and it’s different for every shifter. Maybe it’s the same for you. Maybe more of your powers are manifesting.”

That’s a scary thought.

Steve looks at Parker. “The pack needs to keep a closer eye on her at school. If she’s developing new powers…” his voice trails off.

Parker nods. “I’ll make sure Will, Blaine, or myself are in every class so we can keep an eye on her.”

“Good,” Steve says. He looks at me. “You are an interesting girl. I’m excited to see what the future brings.”

But the way he says it—it makes me feel like a science experiment.

We can be friends.

After leaving Steve’s office, I expect Parker to walk me home, but he surprises me by asking me to stay and hang out. I figure it doesn’t matter—Dad won’t be home anyway. Staying over here beats being alone, even if I should stay away from Parker.

His house is chaotic and loud, as usual, but we bypass the noise and head straight up the stairs to his room.

“I thought you weren’t allowed to have girls in your room,” I tease him as he shuts the door.

He sits down on the edge of his bed. “Ignore anything Gemma says. Besides, my mom likes you. She knows nothing is going to happen between us.”

I sit down, making sure to keep plenty of distance between us. “Because of the soulmate thing.”

He nods. “I can’t believe Will and Blaine talked to you about that.”

I shrug one shoulder. “I think Will was worried that you liked me. Or I liked you. Because of the hand holding thing. I told him the truth, but he’s still pretty adamant about it.”

Parker frowns. “I wonder if Will likes you.”

“He can’t stand me.”

He raises an eyebrow at me. “Henley, you don’t actually believe that, do you?”

I nod. “It’s okay. He doesn’t have to like me. I understand that I’m not like you guys. He’s under no obligation to be friends with me.”

“I’ll talk to him.”

“Don’t.” I tuck a piece of hair behind my ear. “Blaine was the one who talked to me about soulmates first.”

Parker’s eyes widen. “Really?”

“Yeah.”

“What did he say?”

I lower my head, letting my hair curtain my face. “Uh, something about me being easy to fall in love with and that’s why I should stay away from you.”

Parker stays quiet beside me. I dare to look over at him and see that his eyebrows are furrowed.

“Don’t worry—what he said was absurd,” I say, trying to reassure him. “He said Will was only mean to me because he didn’t want to fall in love with me. I’m pretty sure he was messing with me. I’m not pretty likethat. I don’t think I’m ugly, but I’m also not the kind of girl that gets attention from guys.”

Parker shakes his head. “You’re the one who is absurd, Henley. Blaine was right—you would be easy to fall in love with. Maybe Will has the right idea. Maybe pushing you away would be easier, but I can’t do that to you. Especially not after what you told me. I know the only reason public school is bearable for you is because of me. Because I help somehow.”
